HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
HEALTH EFFECTS
ACUTE
SWALLOWED The liquid is discomforting to the gastro intestinal tract and may be
harmful if swallowed. Ingestion may result in nausea, pain, vomiting.
Vomit entering the lungs by aspiration may cause potentially lethal
chemical pneumonitis. Considered an unlikely route of entry in
commercial / industrial environments.
EYE The mist is highly discomforting to the eyes and capable of causing pain
and severe conjunctivitis. Corneal injury may develop, with possible
permanent impairment of vision, if not promptly and adequately treated.
SKIN The liquid is discomforting to the skin and is capable of causing skin
reactions which may lead to dermatitis from repeated exposures over
long periods. Toxic effects may result from skin absorption. The material
may cause skin irritation after prolonged or repeated exposure and may
produce a contact dermatitis (non-allergic). This form of dermatitis is
often characterised by skin redness (erythema) and swelling (oedema)
which may progress to vasiculation, scaling and thickening of the
epidermis. Histologically there may be intercellular oedema of the
spongy layer (spongiosis) and intracellular oedema of the epidermis..
INHALED The vapour / mist is discomforting to the upper respiratory tract.
Inhalation hazard is increased at higher temperatures. Acute effects from
inhalation of high concentrations of vapour are pulmonary irritation,
including coughing, with nausea; central nervous system depression-
characterised by headache and dizziness, increased reaction time, fatigue
and loss of coordination. If exposure to highly concentrated solvent
atmosphere is prolonged this may lead to narcosis, unconsciousness,
even coma and possible death.
WARNING: Intentional misuse by concentrating/inhaling contents may
be lethal.
CHRONIC Principal routes of exposure are by skin contact/absorption and
inhalation of mist/vapour.
Chronic solvent inhalation exposures may result in nervous system
impairment and liver and blood changes.
Prolonged or continuous skin contact with the liquid may cause defatting
with drying, cracking, irritation and dermatitis following.
WARNING: Aerosol containers may present pressure-related hazards.

FIRST AID:
SWALLOWED Immediately rinse mouth out with water. Give a glass of water to drink.
Do not induce vomiting. Lean victim forward to reduce the risk of
aspiration. Never give drink to unconscious person. Seek medical advice.
For further advice call Poisons Information Centre.

EYE Hold eyes open & flood with water for at least 15 minutes. Seek
immediate medical advice.
SKIN If solids or aerosol mist are deposited upon the skin. Remove
contaminated clothing and wash area thoroughly with water and soap if
available. Remove any adhering solids with industrial skin cleansing
cream. DO NOT use solvents. Seek medical aid if irritation occurs.
INHALED Remove person to fresh air. Lay patient down and keep warm. If
breathing is shallow, apply oxygen and seek medical aid.
FIRST AID FACILITIES Where bodily contact may occur, an eye wash station & safety shower or
supply of clean water should be readily available.
ADVICE TO DOCTOR No specific treatment. Treat symptomatically.

TWA: The Time- Weighted Average airborne Concentrations over an eight hour working day, for a five day
working week over an entire working life.
STEL: (Short Term Exposure Limit)- The average airborne concentration over a 15 minute period which
should not be exceeded at any time during a normal eight hour work day. According to current knowledge
these concentration should neither impair the health of, nor cause undue discomfort to, nearly all the
workers.
Peak Limitation- A ceiling concentration which should not be exceeded over a measurement period which
should be as short as possible but not exceeding 15 minutes.
These exposure standards are guidelines to be used in the control of occupational health hazards. All
atmospheric contamination should be kept to as low a level as is workable. Exposure standards should not be
used as fine dividing lines between safe and dangerous concentrations of chemicals. They are not a measure
of relative toxicity.

Toluene- Is not a carcinogen or mutagenic. It does not impair fertility. Toluene causes foetotoxicity at doses
which are maternally toxic.
