HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
Health Effects
Acute - Swallowed No acute toxicity data is available for this formulation; however it is
anticipated that the single dose oral toxicity is low. The quantity
swallowed incidental to industrial handling are not likley to cause injury,
but ingestion of larger quantities may cause injury. If liquid is
aspirated, ie enters the lung, lung damage, or even death due to chemical
pneumonia, may be caused. (Chemical pneumonia is a condition caused by
petroleum or petroleum-like solvents.
Acute - Eye May cause moderate eye irritation. May cause corneal injury. Vapours may
irritate eyes. Vapours may cause lacrymation (tears).
Acute - Skin Repeated or prolonged skin contact may lead to irritation.
Repeated contact will cause drying and flaking of the skin.
A single exposure is not likely to result in the absorption of harmful
amounts through the skin.
Acute - Inhaled Excess vapour concentrations are readily attainable and could be hazardous
on a single exposure. Excessive exposure may irritate the eyes, nose,
throat and lungs. Signs and symptoms of excessive exposure are central
nervous system effects such as headache, dizziness, drowsiness. Anaesthetic
or narcotic effects are also symptoms of excessive exposure. Nausea and
gastrointestinal effects may be experienced.
Chronic No relevant data is available for this product. However it is anticipated
that prolonged or repeated skin contact may lead to dermatitic effects and
prolonged (hours) and excessive exposure may lead to serious adverse effects, even
death.
Effects of long-term or repeated exposure to toluene:
The liquid defats the skin. The substance may have effects on the central nervous
system. Exposure to the substance may enhance hearing damage caused by exposure to
noise. Animal tests show that this substance possibly causes toxicity to human
reproduction or development.
Route(s) of Entry The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation, through the skin and by
ingestion.
Other Information Toxicological data available for the component solvents follows:
TOLUENE; Signs and symptoms of excessive exposure may be central nervous
system effects. Excessive exposure may cause neurologic signs and symptoms,
irritation of the upper respiratory tract. Note: Intentional misuse by
deliberate inhalation may cause nervous system damage, liver and kidney
effects, hearing loss and death. Animal tests show that this substance
possibly causes toxicity to human reproduction or development.
METHYL ETHYL KETONE; Repeated excessive exposure to high concentrations may
cause liver effects. Animal tests show that this substance possibly causes
toxic effects upon human reproduction.

First Aid
Swallowed Do NOT induce vomiting. Call a doctor and/or transport to an emergency
facility immediately.
Eye Hold eyes open, wash with flowing water for 15 minutes. Consult a doctor.
Skin Wash affected areas with copious quantities of water.
Inhaled Remove to fresh air if effects occur. If not breathing commence
resuscitation (eg. mouth-to-mouth). If breathing difficult, oxygen can be
given by trained person. Call a doctor.

First Aid Facilities If poisoning occurs contact a doctor or a Poisons Information Centre.

Advice to Doctor
Advice to Doctor Because rapid absorption of toluene may occur through the lungs if
aspirated and cause systemic effects, the decision of whether to induce
vomiting should be made by the attending physician. If lavage is performed,
suggest endotracheal or esophageal control. The danger of aspiration must
be weighed against the toxicity of the other components. Exposure to
toluene may increase 'myocardial irritability'.
No specific antidote. Supportive care. Treat symptomatically.
Repeated excessive exposure to high concentrations of methyl isobutyl
ketone, a component of this product, may aggravate pre-existing liver
disease.

Other Health Hazard Information
Entry Route(s) The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation, through the skin and by
ingestion.

PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
Exposure Limits None established for this mixture. Workplace Exposure Standards (W.E.S.)
have been published by Worksafe Australia in May 1995 for each solvent.
W.E.S.
T.W.A. S.T.E.L.
Toluene; 100 ppm, 150 ppm
Methyl ethyl ketone; 150 ppm, 300 ppm
Methyl isobutyl ketone; 50 ppm, 75 ppm
n-Butanol; 50 ppm, Peak **, Skin #
n-Butyl acetate; 150 ppm, 200 ppm
** Peak - peak limitation; a ceiling concentration which should not be
exceeded.
# Skin; absorption through the skin may be a significant source of
exposure.
T.W.A. - Time-weighted average exposure concentration.
S.T.E.L. - Short term exposure limit.
Eng. Controls Control atmospheric concentrations below exposure guidelines. Use with good
general ventilation or with local exhaust ventilation for some operations.
Other Information Odour:
Methyl isobutyl ketone has a distinctive odour and a odour threshold of less
than 1 ppm. Methyl ethyl ketone has an odour threshold of 25 ppm. However
in a mixture of solvents the specific odour of each chemical is not distinct
and should not be used as a means of assessing exposure potential.

Personal Protection
Protective Equip. Avoid breathing vapour or mist. Control atmospheric concentrations below
exposure guidelines. If respiratory protection is required use an approved
air-purifying (organic vapour) respirator. Avoid contact with skin. Wear
clean body-covering clothing. If prolonged or repeated exposure is
anticipated wear impervious gloves. Remove contaminated clothing and wash
thoroughly before re-use. Avoid contact with eyes. Wear safety glasses. If
potential for eye contact likely wear chemical goggles. If vapour exposure
causes discomfort wear full-face respirator.

Flammability
Fire Hazards Extremely flammable. Keep away from heat, sparks or naked flames. Flameproof
equipment necessary in area where this chemical is being used. Nearby equipment
must be earthed. May form explosive mixtures with air.
