3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

CLASSIFICATION OF THE SUBSTANCE AND MAIN HAZARDS
Classified as:
- irritant: Xi
risk phrases: R 36/37/38
- harmful: Xn
risk phrases: R 20/22
Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin. Harmful by inhalation and if swallowed.
OTHER HAZARDS
May cause nervous system effects. Skin sensitizer. May dry the skin making it exfoliate.
Caprolactam is a highly hygroscopic and combustible. Vapours may form explosive vapour-air
mixtures. Vapour is heavier than air and collects near the ground and in the lower parts of rooms.
Irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion: nitrogen
oxides, ammonia, carbon oxides.
Caprolactam reacts dangerously with strong oxidizers and strong bases. When heated over 1000C
caprolactam can undergo exothermic polymerisation.

4. FIRST AID MEASURES

AFTER INHALATION
Remove victim from exposure, place in a convenient position and keep at rest. If breathing is difficult,
give oxygen. Get medical aid immediately.

AFTER INGESTION
Immediately the victim shall induce vomiting by him/herself, then do not induce vomiting.
Get medical aid immediately.
AFTER SKIN CONTACT
Remove contaminated clothing. Wash skin with plenty of water and soap. If large skin surface is
irritated (reddened) call in physician.
Depending on character and extent of skin changes, get dermatologist attention.

AFTER EYE CONTACT
Flush eyes with plenty of cold, preferably running water for minimum 15 minutes.
Get ophthalmologist attention.
FIRST-AID MEASURES
Antidotes: not known.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

BASIC PROCEEDING RULES
Immediately alert the surrounding of the fire (emergency). Move from exposure area all people who do
not participate in emergency clearing and all flammable materials. Mark the emergency area.
Call the Fire Fighting authorities and State Police. Safeguard the sink basins. Contain combustion
products with water spray. Collect contaminated fire water. Containers exposed to high temperature or
flames shall be cooled with water or removed from the emergency area.
SUITABLE EXTINGUISHING MEDIA
Carbon dioxide, dry chemicals, medium or heavy foams, water spray or fog.

SPECIAL EXPOSURE HAZARDS
Caprolactam vapour is heavier than air. Vapours can form explosive mixtures with air.
During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or
combustion: nitrogen oxides, ammonia, carbon oxides.
.
SPECIAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT FOR FIRE-FIGHTERS
Protective clothing, self-contained breathing apparatus.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS
Avoid direct contact with released chemical. Wear protective clothing, goggles, gloves of natural
rubber or denim reinforced with genuine leather, self-contained breathing apparatus. Ban the use of
open flames and remove all ignition sources.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS
Safeguard the sink basins. Inform about emergency consumers of drinking, cooling and utility water.
Alert the Fire Fighting authorities and the State Police. If possible, stop the leak.
METHODS FOR CLEANING UP / ABSORPTION
Allow liquid caprolactam to solidify, then pick up and place in a covered container or a dust-tight PE
bag. Spilled crystalline caprolactam shall be collected into new packagings (covered containers or
dust-tight PE bags).
Flush spill area with plenty of water. Send recovered caprolactam to the manufacturer for utilisation or
combustion in an incinerator provided with a absorption system of combustion products.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

HANDLING
When handling the material do not eat, drink, avoid direct contact with material, avoid inhaling vapour
and dust, follow personal hygiene rules, use personal protection equipment, work in well ventilated
rooms, avoid exposing material to open flames.

STORAGE
Crystalline caprolactam shall be stored in dry rooms, at ambient temperature (protect from
overheating), away from flammable materials, strong oxidizers and strong bases. The storage rooms
shall be provided with water spray systems protecting from possible fire spreading.
Liquid caprolactam shall be stored in stainless steel tanks, under oxygen-free nitrogen atmosphere, at
temperature 85梅95 0C (because of quality requirements).
To pack crystalline caprolactam, packagings resistant to caprolactam shall be used (e.g. PE bags or
containers).
Suitable packaging for liquid caprolactam - heated stainless steel tanks (containers).
