HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
ACUTE:

INGESTION
Moderately irritating. Ingestion may cause symptoms of stomach pain, nausea and vomiting.

EYE
Liquid may cause severe eye irritation.

SKIN
Mildly irritating. Contact with the product may defat the skin and contribute to dermatitis. 2-Butoxyethanol may be
absorbed through intact skin.

INHALATION
The product has relatively low volatility so inhalation of hazardous quantities of vapour is unlikely to occur as a result of
exposure during normal use. However, if generated, vapours or spray mists may cause irritation to the respiratory tract,
headache and nausea.

CHRONIC
Inhalation, ingestion skin contact are the routes of entry into the body. The product defats the skin and prolonged or
repeated contact may contribute to dermatitis.
2-Butoxyethanol: TDLo (oral, woman): 600mg/Kg; TCL0 (inhaled, human): 195ppm/8H; LD50 (oral, rat): 470mg/Kg;
LC50 (inhaled, rat): 450ppm/4H; LD50 (skin, rabbit): 220mg/Kg.
This compound was the subject of an NH&MRC alert regarding reproductive hazards. (October 1982).

ADVICE TO DOCTOR
Treat symptomatically.

FIRST AID PROCEDURES

INGESTION
NEVER GIVE AN UNCONSCIOUS PERSON ANYTHING TO DRINK NOR ATTEMPT TO INDUCE VOMITING. If person
is conscious, rinse mouth out with water ensuring that mouth wash is not swallowed. Give about 250mL (2 glasses) of
water to drink. DO NOT attempt to induce vomiting. Seek medical attention.

EYE
Hold eyelids open and rinse the eye continuously with a gentle stream of clean running water for at least fifteen minutes.
Seek medical attention.

SKIN
Remove contaminated clothing and wash thoroughly with soap and water. Use water alone, if soap is unavailable. Apply
a moisturising hand cream, if available. Seek medical attention if any soreness or inflammation of the skin persists or
develops later. Launder affected clothing before re-use.

INHALATION
Remove to fresh air. Keep warm and at rest. If breathing is laboured, hold in a half upright position (this assists
respiration). Apply artificial respiration if breathing has stopped. Seek medical attention if any symptoms persist.

PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

ENGINEERING CONTROL
Ventilation requirements depend on the quantity of product in use and the method of application. Work area should have
good, mechanical ventilation.

PERSONAL PROTECTION
Requirements are dependent on working conditions, method of application and quantity of product in use. For brush and
roller application, safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields, rubber gloves and overall are adequate. A half face
respirator with particulate and organic solvent vapour filter is required for all spray applications and may also be required
for other applications in poorly ventilated areas. In confined spaces use air supplied breathing apparatus. N.B. TAKE
THE LIMITS OF ABSORPTION CAPACITY INTO ACCOUNT. CHANGE FILTERS REGULARLY.

FLAMMABILITY
Non-flammable. May evolve toxic fumes if heated strongly.

EXPOSURE STANDARDS
3
2-Butoxyethanol(111-76-2): E.S. TWA: 25ppm / 121mg/m , Skin.

SAFE HANDLING PROCEDURES

STORAGE
Transport is not regulated. Store in a cool well ventilated area. Protect containers against physical damage.

SPILLS & DISPOSAL
SPILLS: Wear protective equipment as specified for handling. Cover with an absorbent such as earth, sand or a
commercial oil absorber. Sweep up and collect in sealable containers. Dispose to approved landfill.
DISPOSAL: If possible, return to supplier. Otherwise, dispose to approved landfill.

FIRE EXPLOSION
Non-flammable. May evolve toxic fumes if heated strongly.
Wear self-contained breathing apparatus. Keep containers as cool as possible by spraying with water, from a protected
position. Extinguish using using whatever is suitable for the primary cause of the fire.
