SECTION 3 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

Emergency Overview - Warning! Brown liquid. Slight musty colour. May cause eye, skin and respiratory tract irritation.
Harmful if inhaled. May cause allergic respiratory reaction. Toxic gas is given off during burning or thermal decomposition.
POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS (for more details, refer to Section 11)
Primary entry route(s): Skin contact from liquid and aerosols (spray application). Inhalation. Although MDI is low in
volatility, an inhalation hazard can exist from MDI aerosols or vapours formed during heating, foaming or spraying.
Effects of short-term (acute) and long-term (chronic) exposure:

N/Ap: not applicable N/Av: not available Page 1 of 5
Material Safety Data Sheet: LIQUID STAPLE ?# 855 HARDENER CATALYST
(Part-H)
Inhalation: MDI vapours or mist at concentrations above the TLV can irritate (burning sensation) the mucous membranes in
the respiratory tract (nose, throat, lungs) causing runny nose, sore throat, coughing, chest discomfort, shortness of breath and
reduced lung function (breathing obstruction). Persons with a pre-existing, non-specific bronchial hyperactivity can respond
to concentrations below the TLV with similar symptoms as well as asthma attack. Exposure well above the TLV may lead to
bronchitis, bronchial spasm and pulmonary edema (fluid in lungs). These effects are usually reversible. Chemical
hypersensitive pneumonitis, with flu-like symptoms (e.g. fever and chills) has also been reported. These symptoms can be
delayed up to several hours after exposure.
Chronic Inhalation: As a result of previous repeated overexposure or a single large dose, certain individuals develop
isocyanate sensitization (chemical asthma) which will cause them to react to a later exposure at levels well below the TLV.
These symptoms which can include chest tightness, wheezing, cough, shortness of breath or asthma attack, could be
immediate or delayed (up to several hours after exposure). Similar to many non-specific asthmatic responses, there are
reports that once sensitized an individual can experience these symptoms upon exposure to dusts, cold air or other irritants.
This increased lung sensitivity can persist for weeks and in severe cases for several years. Overexposure to isocyanates has
also been reported to cause permanent lung damage (irreversible).
Skin: Slight to moderate irritation. Prolonged contact with liquid or vapours can cause reddening, swelling, rash, scaling,
blistering, and in some cases skin sensitization. RESPIRATORY SENSITIZATION can result from skin contact with MDI.
Eye: Slight to moderate irritation. Liquid, aerosols or vapours are irritating and can cause tearing, reddening, and swelling. If
left untreated, corneal damage can occur and is slow to heal.
Ingestion: Can result in irritation in the mouth, stomach tissue and digestive tract. Symptoms can include sore throat,
abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

SECTION 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES

Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If not breathing, give artificial respiration.
Consult a physician immediately.
Skin contact: Wash with soap and lukewarm water for several minutes. Remove contaminated clothing. Launder contaminated
clothing before reuse. If irritation persists, consult a physician immediately.
Eye contact: Flush with plenty of lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation persists, consult a physician immediately.
Ingestion: If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. If conscious, have victim drink large amounts of water. Consult a physician or
a poison control center for help immediately.

SECTION 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

Fire hazards/conditions of flammability: This product is not flammable under normal handling conditions.
Flash point (Method): 198.8oC (390oF)
Lower flammable limit (% by volume): N/Av
Upper flammable limit (% by volume): N/Av
Sensitivity to mechanical impact: N/Av
Sensitivity to static discharge: N/Av
Auto-ignition temperature: N/Av
Suitable extinguishing media: Dry chemicals, carbon dioxide, and foam. Water spray for large fires.
Special fire-fighting procedures/equipment: A self-contained breathing apparatus is required for fire-fighting personnel to
protect themselves from toxic products produced during the combustion. Closed containers may explode with the pressure
building from the heat. Use water to cool fire exposed containers and prevent this situation.
Hazardous combustion products: Carbon oxides and other toxic products that are produced during combustion.

SECTION 6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Personal precautions: See Section 8.

N/Ap: not applicable N/Av: not available Page 2 of 5
Material Safety Data Sheet: LIQUID STAPLE ?# 855 HARDENER CATALYST
(Part-H)
Spill response/Cleanup: Evacuate and ventilate spill area. Contain spill with dikes to prevent migration into sewer or
waterways. If required, a blanket of protein foam may be placed over the spill. Use proper protective equipment (See Section
8). Mop up the product and clean with absorbent material. Place in secured container, but not sealed. Transport product to
well ventilated area and treat with neutralizing solution (mixture of 80 % water and 20 % Tergitol TMN-10 or mixture of 90
% water, 3 to 8 % concentrated ammonia and 2 % detergent) by adding 10 parts of neutralizer per part of isocyanates. Allow
to stand uncovered for 48 hours to let carbon dioxide to escape. Decontaminate floor with solution letting stand for at least 15
minutes.
Environmental precautions: Confine spill, preventing it from entering sewer lines or waterways. Dispose of as per local,
state and federal regulations.

SECTION 7 - HANDLING AND STORAGE

Safe handling procedures: Use with adequate ventilation. Do not breathe vapours or aerosols. Avoid skin and eye contact. Use
proper protective equipment (See Section 8). Keep away from incompatible materials such as water, amines strong bases and
alcohol. Empty containers are still hazardous. Keep containers closed when not in use. Employee training and education is
mandatory to meet OSHA standards.
Storage requirements: Store between 18oC (64oC) and 30oC (86oF) not more than six months. Do not expose to extreme heat.
MDI slowly reacts with water to form carbon dioxide. This gas can eventually expand and rupture sealed containers. Store in a
well-ventilated and dry area. Keep containers closed when not in use. Avoid moisture.

SECTION 8 - EXPOSURE CONTROLS AND PERSONAL PROTECTION

Engineering controls: Use local exhaust ventilation system to maintain concentrations of contaminants below exposure
limits. ACGIH industrial ventilation document should be consulted for guidance about adequate ventilation. Isocyanates
levels must be monitored. Techniques have been developed by OSHA and NIOSH.
Respiratory Protection: Respiratory protection is required if the concentrations are lower than the exposure limits. Use a
NIOSH approved respirator if the exposure limits are unknown.
Protective Clothing/Equipment: Wear chemically protective gloves (butyl rubber, nitrile rubber), boots, aprons, and
gauntlets to prevent prolonged or repeated skin contact. Wear protective chemical safety goggles or in a splash environment
in combination with a face shield. Make emergency eyewash stations, safety/quick-drench showers, and washing facilities
available in work area. Separate contaminated work clothes from street clothes. Launder before reuse.
Comments: Medical supervision of all employees who handle or come in contact with isocyanates is recommended. Avoid
prolonged exposure beyond recommended exposure levels. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid breathing vapours or
mists (aerosols). Never eat, drink, or smoke in work areas. Practice good personal hygiene after using this material.
