MSDS GLOSSARY
鈥? 29 CFR Part 1910 - Code of Federal Regulations Title 29 Part 1910 is a compilation
of federal regulations relating to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Part 1910 Sections 1000 and 1025 deal with limits for air contaminants.
鈥? ACGIH - American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Establishes
recommended exposure limits for chemical substances. Publishes Threshold Limit
Values (TLV).
鈥? Acute Effect - Adverse effect on a human or animal that has severe symptoms
developing rapidly, and quickly coming to a crisis.
鈥? Air Supplied Respirator 鈥? A positive pressure forced air respirator approved by
NIOSH.
鈥? Asphyxiation - Death caused by suffocation, lack of oxygen caused by a gas or
vapor.
鈥? CAS No. - Chemical Abstract Services Number - A number specific to a chemical or
mixture.
鈥? Carcinogen - A substance capable of causing cancer.
鈥? CEPA status - The status of a chemical under the Canadian Environmental
Protection Agency.
鈥? Chronic Effect - An adverse effect on a human or animal, with symptoms that
develop slowly, over a long period of time, or that recur frequently.
鈥? Chronic Toxicity - Adverse effects from repeated doses or overexposure.
鈥? Coatings CareTM 鈥? An industry wide initiative to promote efforts to protect
employees, customers, the public and the environment; provide relevant information
on the safe use and disposal of industry products to customers, and make such
information available to the public on request; make protection of health, safety, and
the environment an early and integral part of the organizational planning process;
comply with all legal requirements which affect operations and products; be
responsive to community concerns; and assist governments in the development of
equitable and attainable standards. Akzo Nobel Coatings, Inc. is a signatory to this
Coatings CareTM.
鈥? EPA 鈥? The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency
鈥? Flash Point - The minimum temperature at which a liquid gives off vapor in sufficient
concentration to ignite when exposed to an ignition source.
鈥? Health Hazard - A substance in which it has been established that acute or chronic
effects may occur to those exposed.
鈥? IARC - International Agency for Research on Cancer.
鈥? Irritation - A health effect, not corrosive, which causes a reversible inflammatory
effect on living tissue at the site of contact.
鈥? LC50 - The dose ( by inhalation) which is required to produce death in 50% of the
exposed species, usually within the first 30 days.
鈥? LD50 - The dose (by oral or dermal exposure) which is required to produce death in
50% of the exposed species, usually within the first 30 days.
鈥? LEL - Lower explosion limit - The lowest concentration of vapor that will produce a
flash fire when an ignition source is present.
mg/m3 - Milligrams per cubic meter concentration.
鈥?
鈥? mg/l - Milligrams per liter.
鈥? MSHA - Mine Safety and Health Administration.
鈥? Mutagenicity - risk of inheritable genetic effects
鈥? NIOSH - National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. NIOSH evaluates
medical, biological, engineering, chemical, trade and other information relevant to

hazards and recommends preventive measures to reduce or eliminate adverse
health and safety effects from these hazards.
鈥? n. av. - Not available
鈥? n. ap. - Not applicable
鈥? NFPA 704 鈥? A symbol sometimes displayed on the outside of a building to warn
emergency rescue personnel of the dangers of chemicals inside.
鈥? NFPA Flam - National Fire Protection Association flammability rating.
鈥? Non-sparking Tools - Tools which are made from beryllium-copper, aluminum or
bronze greatly reduce the possibility of igniting dusts, gases, or flammable liquid
vapors. These tools emit some sparks, but the low heat content of the sparks greatly
reduces the probability of ignitions.
鈥? NTP - National Toxicity Program.
鈥? OSHA - U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Agency.
鈥? Ozone Depleters 鈥? Certain halogenated chemicals deemed by the EPA to deplete
the earth鈥檚 ozone layer. Akzo Nobel Car Refinishes formulating policies forbid the
use of these chemicals.
鈥? PEL - Permissible Exposure Limit - Occupational exposure limit established by
OSHA. Time weighted average limit or maximum concentration exposure limit.
鈥? ppm - Parts per million concentration.
鈥? % Vol Vol - Volatile volume percentage of a product or what part of a substance will
evaporate.
鈥? Reproductive Toxicity - risk of sterility
鈥? Route of Entry - Manner in which a hazardous chemical enters the body.
鈥? SARA - Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act - Certain chemicals
defined as toxic are reported under various SARA Titles during each year. This
includes releases and inventories.
鈥? Sensitization - Causing a substantial proportion of people or animals exposed to
develop and allergic reaction.
鈥? Teratogenicity - risk of malformation in an unborn fetus
鈥? TLV - Threshold Limit Value - Airborne concentration to which nearly all persons can
be exposed day after day without adverse effects. Time weighted average limit.
鈥? TWA - Time Weighted Average - The average allowed exposure (airborne
concentration) weighted over an eight hour work shift.
鈥? TSCA status 鈥? The status of a chemical under the Toxic Substances Control Act of
the EPA.
鈥? U. S. Federal Hazardous Air Pollutants 鈥? Chemicals considered by the EPA to
toxic.
鈥? Vapor Pressure - in mm Hg at 68 (20C)F
鈥? Weight per Gal. - density as expressed in pounds per gallon.
鈥? WHMIS 鈥? Canadian Workplace Hazardous Materials Identification System
鈥? < - Less than.
