HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
HEALTH EFFECTS
ACUTE
SWALLOWED Low order of toxicity. Harmful if swallowed. Tends to break into foam if
the patient vomits. Aspiration into lungs may lead to bronchopneumonia
or pulmonary oedema. Ingestion of larger amounts may cause coma and
death.
EYE Irritating to the eyes, may injure eye tissue if not removed promptly.
SKIN Prolonged and repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis due to
defatting effect. Low order of toxicity. MIBK is under review for skin
absorption.
INHALED Vapour concentrations above recommended exposure levels may be
irritating to the eyes and the respiratory tract may cause headaches and
dizziness, Somnolence and narcosis, could be anaesthetic and may have
other central nervous system effects. Low order of toxicity.
CHRONIC There is no evidence that exposure to Methyl Isobutyl Ketone (MIBK) or
Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) alone cause progressive or irreversible
neurotoxic effects. However, simultaneous overexposure to MIBK and
n-hexane or MEK and n-hexane can potentiate the known irreversible
neurotoxic effects of n-hexane. There is no reported evidence that these
effects occur when exposure to both chemicals is maintained below
established ACGIH limits.
FIRST AID:
SWALLOWED If swallowed, give a glass of water. Do not induce vomiting. Lean victim
forward to reduce the risk of aspiration. Never give drink to unconscious
person. Seek medical advice. For further advice call Poisons Information
Centre.
EYE Hold eyes open & flood with water for at least 15 minutes. Seek
immediate medical advice.
SKIN Remove contaminated clothing and wash area with soap and water. Seek
medical aid if irritation occurs.
INHALED Remove person to fresh air. Lay patient down and keep warm. If
breathing is shallow, apply oxygen and seek medical aid.
FIRST AID FACILITIES Where bodily contact may occur, an eye wash station & safety shower or
supply of clean water should be readily available.
ADVICE TO DOCTOR Treat symptomatically.

ENGINEERING CONTROLS Provide sufficient ventilation to keep airborne levels below the exposure
limit. Where vapours or mists are generated, particularly in enclosed
areas, and natural ventilation is inadequate, a flameproof exhaust
ventilation system is required. Product can accumulate static discharges,
which can cause an incendiary electrical discharge. Refer to AS1940-
The storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids and AS
2430- Explosive gas atmospheres for further information concerning
ventilation requirements.
PERSONAL PROTECTION
Where concentrations in air may exceed the limits given, respiratory
RESPIRATOR TYPE: protection may be required. Respiratory protection should comply with
AS1716 and be selected in accordance with AS 1715.
GLOVE TYPE: PVC or nitrile gloves should be worn when handling. Hand protection
should comply with AS 2161
EYE PROTECTION: Wear chemical goggles or face shield if there is a risk of splashing or eye
contact.
CLOTHING: Overalls and safety boots are recommended.
FLAMMABILITY
FIRE HAZARDS: Highly Flammable. Isolate from sources of heat, naked flames, sparks
and oxidising materials. Take precautions against discharges of static
electricity. Earth and bond all process equipment including tanks and
drums. Ensure ventilation is adequate to prevent build up of explosive
atmosphere. Refer to AS 1940- Storage and handling of flammable and
combustible liquids and AS 1965 ?Safe working in a confined space for
more specific information on these subjects.
SOURCES OF IGNITION ADVICE: Avoid all sources of ignition.
HAZCHEM CODE: 3[Y]E
SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION
STORAGE AND TRANSPORT: Store in a cool dry area away from direct sunlight, heat, sparks and open
flames Take precautionary measures against static discharges. Keep
containers securely sealed. Store away from food items and incompatible
materials such as caustic, amines, alkanolamines, aldehydes, ammonia,
strong oxidising agent and chlorinated compound. Containers of this
material may be hazardous when empty since they retain product
residues (vapours, liquid). Classified as Dangerous goods Class 3, must
be stored and transported in accordance with appropriate state, federal
and territory regulations.
SPILLS AND DISPOSAL: Wear personal protective clothing as recommended above. Remove all
ignition sources and ventilate area. Contain the spill with sand, earth or
inert material. Place in a suitable inert container for waste disposal.
Dispose of in accordance with relevant local regulations. Do not empty
in drains.
