11 TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Toxicological Information
Data on this material and/or its components are summarized below.
Single exposure (acute) studies indicate:
Oral - Moderately Toxic to Rats (LD50 227-300 mg/kg)
Dermal - Slightly Toxic to Rabbits (LD50 1,240-1,300 mg/kg)
Inhalation - Slightly Toxic to Rats (4-hr LC50 3.5-4.78 mg/l)
Eye Irritation - Moderately Irritating to Rabbits
Skin Irritation - Severely Irritating to Rabbits (4-hr exposure)
Skin allergy was observed in guinea pigs and humans following repeated exposure. This material is readily
absorbed in the respiratory tract and from the gastrointestinal tract. It is slowly absorbed through the skin.
Toxic effects noted in rats following repeated inhalation include eye, nose and respiratory irritation, breathing
difficulties, changes in nasal and upper respiratory tract tissues and an increased incidence of animal deaths at
higher exposure levels. Repeated exposure to lower concentrations was without effect in rats. In a repeat oral
dosing study, rats exposed in their drinking water exhibited decreased weight gains and water consumption,
with kidney effects. Repeated skin application resulted in skin damage (necrosis). Long-term inhalation by rats
produced eye and nasal changes (changes in olfactory epithelium of the nasal mucosa and of the cornea)
attributable to the irritant properties of the material. No treatment-related signs of systemic toxicity or increase
in tumors were found. No birth defects were observed in the offspring of rats following inhalation exposure
during pregnancy. No genetic changes were observed in tests using bacterial cells. Both positive and negative
responses have been reported in tests using animals or animal cells.
