system. This product is water reactive.

8 EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION

Engineering Controls
Investigate engineering techniques to reduce exposures below airborne exposure limits. Provide ventilation
if necessary to control exposure levels below airborne exposure limits (see below). If practical, use local
mechanical exhaust ventilation at sources of air contamination such as open process equipment. Consult
ACGIH ventilation manual or NFPA Standard 91 for design of exhaust systems.
Eye / Face Protection
Where there is potential for eye contact, wear chemical goggles and have eye flushing equipment
immediately available.
Skin Protection
Wear appropriate chemical resistant protective clothing and chemical resistant gloves to prevent skin
contact. Consult glove manufacturer to determine appropriate type glove material for given application.
Wear chemical goggles, a face shield, and chemical resistant clothing such as a rubber apron when
splashing may occur. Rinse immediately if skin is contaminated. Remove contaminated clothing promptly
and wash before reuse. Clean protective equipment before reuse. Provide a safety shower at any location
where skin contact can occur. Wash skin thoroughly after handling.
Respiratory Protection
Avoid breathing vapor or mist. When airborne exposure limits are exceeded (see below), use NIOSH
approved respiratory protection equipment appropriate to the material and/or its components. Full facepiece
equipment is recommended and, if used, replaces need for face shield and chemical goggles. Consult
OSHA Standard (29 CFR ?1910.10 to determine required type equipment for given application. Observe
respirator use limitations specified by NIOSH or the manufacturer. For emergency and other conditions
where exposure limit may be significantly exceeded, use an approved full face positive-pressure, self-
contained breathing apparatus or positive-pressure airline with auxiliary self-contained air supply.
Respiratory protection programs must comply with 29 CFR ?1910.134.

11 TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Skin Irritation - Moderately Irritating to Rabbits

Tetrahydrofuran
Occupational exposure to vapor is irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract, while high concentrations
have produced signs of liver damage such as hepatitis and fatty degeneration. Acute inhalation exposure
produced effects on behavior (slow righting reflex, a pattern of decreased motor activity followed by increased
motor activity, etc.). This material rapidly penetrates the skin of rats and rabbits resulting in death. A drying
effect on the skin with no evidence of allergic skin reaction was observed in guinea pigs. Repeated inhalation
by rats and mice produced loss of coordination with evidence of transient sedation and decreases in thymus
and spleen weights. In mice, liver, forestomach, adrenal and uterine effects as well as anesthesia were
observed. Other inhalation studies in rats and mice have shown irritation to eyes, skin and the upper respiratory
tract and changes in liver function and blood chemistry. Repeated oral administration to mice produced no
significant effects. Repeated administration to rats in the drinking water produced no adverse toxic effects. An
increased incidence of kidney tumors in male rats and liver tumors in female mice were observed following long-
term inhalation exposure. Studies in rats and mice have shown developmental effects only at exposure levels
producing toxic effects in the mother. No genetic changes were observed in tests using bacteria, animal cells or
animals.

12 ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Ecotoxicological Information
Data on this material and/or its components are summarized below.

This material is practically non-toxic to water flea (48-hr LC50 3,485 mg/l) and fathead minnow (96-hr LC50
2,160 mg/l).
Chemical Fate Information
This material is not expected to bioconcentrate in fish or other aquatic organisms due to its low log
octanol/water partition coefficient (log Kow 0.47).
