Section 3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
Emergency Overview: Flammable , May form reactive peroxides if not inhibited.
Potential Health Effects:
INHALATION: Major route of exposure. Vapor is heavier than air and can
cause suffocation by reducing the available oxygen for
breathing. Breathing high concentrations of vapor may cause
light-headedness, dizziness, shortness of breath, confusion.
It may cause irritation to respiratory tract and mucus membranes.

EYES: Liquid likely to cause irritation.
Vapors likely to irritate eyes.

SKIN: Not a corrosive or irritant; however, repeated or prolonged exposure
can cause defatting of skin. Not absorbed by skin.

INGESTION: Single dose toxicity is low to moderate. If vomiting occurs
the liquid can be aspirated into lungs, which can cause
chemical pneumonia and systemic effects. Human psychotropic,
gastrointestinal, and central nervous system effects possible.

Material Safety Data Sheet

Inhalation:
Move to fresh air in case of accidental inhalation of vapors. If
victim has stopped breathing, give artificial respiration or oxegen.
Call for prompt medical attention.

Eye Contact:
Flush eyes with large amounts of water for 15 minutes or until
irritation subsides. If irritation persists, get medical attention.

Skin Contact:
Remove contaminated clothing (including shoes) and wash before reuse.
Flush with large amounts of water. Use soap if available. If
irritation persists, seek medical attention.

Ingestion:
Do not induce vomiting unless directed by a physician. If conscious
and alert, give two glasses of water. Seek medical attention
immediately.

Section 5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Flash Point & Method: 1 F, TCC Method
Flammable Limits: LEL: 2.0 UEL: 11.8
Autoignition Temperature: 610 F
GENERAL HAZARD: Fumes may travel for long distances to ignition source.

FIRE FIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS:
Fire fighters should wear self contained, positive-pressure breathing
apparatus and avoid skin contact.

FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT:
foam, dry chemical, carbon dioxide.
HAZARDOUS COMBUSTION PRODUCTS:
Smoke, fumes and oxides of carbon.

================================================================================
Section 6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
LAND SPILL:
Evacuate area. Ventilate area well and avoid breathing vapors. Vapor
concentration will be highest along floor and in low lying areas. Pick up
liquid on suitable absorbent and store in sealed containers.
Remove all possible ignition sources from area.

WATER SPILL:

Section 11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
RESULTS OF COMPONENT TOXICITY TEST PERFORMED:

TETRAHYDROFURAN
Symptoms of respiratory tract irritation and damage to respiratory
epithelium were reported in rats exposed to 5000 ppm of tetrahydro-
furan for 90 days. Elevations of SGPT suggests a disturbance in liver
function. The No Observed Effect Level (NOEL) was reported to be 200
ppm (JPN.J.IND HEALTH 24,379,1982). Tetrahydrofuran was not genotoxic
in microbiological microorganisms (Cancer Research 39:682, 1979),
Drosophila (ENV.MUT. 5:482, 1983).
The National Toxicology Program has reported that exposure to mice and
rats to the vapor levels up to 1800 ppm 6hr/day, 5 days/week for their
lifetime caused an increased incidence of kidney tumors in male rats
and liver tumors in female mice. The significance of these findings
for human health are unclear at this time, and may be related to
"species specific" effects. Elevated incidences of tumors in humans
have not been reported for THF.
