Court of Appeals. These PELs are those now being enforced by Federal OSHA. Be aware
that more restrictive exposure limits may be enforced by some states, agencies or
other authorities. The enforced PEL may not be adequate to ensure worker safety, so
Bacharach, Inc. recommends that the lowest recommended exposure limit always be
observed as reasonable worker protection.

SECTION 3: HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW:
Colorless liquid with characteristic alcohol odor. Highly Flammable! May cause eye
and skin irritation. May be absorbed through the skin in toxic amounts. Toxic by
inhalation and if swallowed.
ACUTE HEALTH HAZARDS:
EYE CONTACT: May cause irritation with possible corneal opacity.
SKIN CONTACT: May cause mild irritation. Methanol is absorbed through the skin and
may cause symptoms described under inhalation and ingestion.
INHALATION: Overexposure to vapors may cause central nervous system effects including
dizziness, nausea, narcosis, visual impairment and even blindness due to the effects
of methanol on the optic nerve.
INGESTION: Methanol is very toxic by ingestion and may cause blindness and death.
CHRONIC HEALTH EFFECTS: Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis and
toxic effects like inhalation from absorption. Chronic overexposure to methanol may
cause visual impairment, liver and kidney damage.
CARCINOGEN STATUS: None of the components is listed as a carcinogen or suspected
carcinogen by IARC, NTP or OSHA, however, anthracene is a common component of coal
tar pitch volatiles, which are regulated as carcinogens by OSHA.
MEDICAL CONDITIONS AGGRAVATED BY EXPOSURE: Pre-existing skin, liver and kidney
diseases may be aggravated.
SEE SECTION 11 - TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION FOR ADDITIONAL DATA
====================================================================================
SECTION 4: FIRST AID
EYE CONTACT: Flush thoroughly with copious amounts of running water for 15 minutes.
Get medical attention if irritation develops.
SKIN CONTACT: Wash well with soap and water, remove contaminated clothing and launder
before re-use. Get medical attention if irritation or symptoms develop.
INHALATION: Remove victim to fresh air, give artificial respiration if needed. Get

immediate medical attention.
INGESTION: Do not give anything by mouth to anyone who is unconscious or convulsing.
Give 3-4 glasses of water or milk to drink then induce vomiting. Get immediate
medical attention.
====================================================================================
SECTION 5: FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD DATA
FLASH POINT: 60.8F (12C) (methanol) TEST METHOD: CC
AUTOIGNITION TEMPERATURE: 725F(385C)(methanol)
FLAMMABLE LIMITS: LEL: 6% (methanol) UEL: 36.5% (methanol)
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Use water fog, foam, halon, carbon dioxide or dry chemical. Cool
exposed containers with water.
SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES: Firefighters should wear NIOSH approved positive
pressure self contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing. Use
shielding to protect against shattering of glass ampoules.
UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS: This liquid is flammable, however, only a very
small amount is present in each ampoule. The glass ampoules will shatter when exposed
to high temperatures.
HAZARDOUS COMBUSTION PRODUCTS: Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon
fragments.
====================================================================================
SECTION 6: ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Remove all sources of ignition. Wear protective clothing as needed. Contain spill and
collect with absorbent towels or other material. Place in closable container for
disposal.
====================================================================================
SECTION 7: HANDLING AND STORAGE
WORK PRACTICES: Prevent contact with the eyes, skin or clothing. Avoid breathing
vapors. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling. Do not eat, drink
or smoke in the work area.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS: Keep away from excessive heat and sources of ignition. Glass
ampoules will shatter if exposed to high temperatures.
STORAGE: Store in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from oxidizers, excessive heat
and sources of ignition.

SECTION 8: EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
VENTILATION: General or local exhaust as needed to maintain concentration below the
TLV. Use explosion-proof equipment.
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: None should be needed under normal use conditions. If needed
wear a NIOSH approved organic vapor respirator or supplied air respirator.
GLOVES: Butyl rubber, neoprene or polyethylene recommended.
EYE PROTECTION: Safety glasses with side shields or chemical safety goggles.
OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Protective apron or lab coat if contact is likely to keep
personal clothing clean. Eye wash facility should be available in the work area.
