SECTION 11 TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Mixture not fully tested

ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS
The following is based upon information contained within MSDS relating to the individual
component materials and the expectation that this mixture will have effects similar to the
individual components.

SWALLOWED
Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial/scientific environment.
The material should be considered irritant and may be harmful/moderately toxic if
swallowed in large quantity.
Ingestion is likely to result in discomfort to the gastro-intestinal tract and may cause severe
mucous membrane damage.
Ingestion may result in sore throat, abdominal pain with central nervous system effects,
headache, dizziness, drowsiness.

EYE
The material may be corrosive to the eyes and cause pain and severe conjunctivitis.
The vapour is discomforting to the eyes.
The material may produce severe irritation to the eye upon prolonged or repeated exposure.

SKIN
The material may be absorbed by skin if contact is prolonged.
Open cuts, abraded or irritated skin should not be exposed to this material.
The material may accentuate a pre-existing skin condition.
MSDS EL141 7 of 9
Toxic effects may result from skin absorption.

INHALED
The vapour is discomforting to the upper respiratory tract.
Inhalation hazard is increased at higher temperature.
May cause non-specific discomfort, headache, dizziness, nausea, anaesthetic effects, slowed
reaction time, slurred speech and may progress to unconsciousness.
Serious poisonings may result in respiratory failure and may be fatal.

CHRONIC HEALTH EFFECTS
Principal routes of exposure are usually by skin contact/absorption and inhalation of vapour.
Gamma-butyrolactone is rapidly converted to gamma-hydroxybutyric acid in the body.
To the best of our knowledge the acute and chronic toxicity of this substance is not fully
known. For this reason health effects described are based on experience with component
materials.
As with any chemical product, contact with unprotected bare skin; inhalation of vapour, mist
or dust in work place atmosphere; or ingestion in any form, should be avoided by observing
good occupational work practice.
