Biomolecules for research MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET
Section 1 : Substance Identification
Streptozocin
Name: CAS Number: 18883-66-4
Catalog Number: EI-138 Chemical Formula: C8H15N3O7
Synonyms: U-9889 Chemical Class: Carbohydrate,
Antibiotic
Company Identification: BIOMOL International L.P.

Section 2 : Health Hazard Data
Acute Health Effects: Exposure may cause nausea, vomiting and alterations in liver functions.
Chronic Health Effects: This compound is toxic to the kidneys. This toxicity is dose related,
cumulative, and can be severe or fatal. Streptozocin may effect glucose metabolism. A diabetic
effect has been observed. Effects of the blood are rare, but some toxicity has been observed. This
product is an irritant to tissues and may lead to local ulceration and necrosis. This product has
been shown in animal studies to be mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic.
Section 3 : First Aid Measures
Eye Contact: Check for and remove contact lenses. DO NOT use eye ointment. Flush eyes with
running water for at least 15 minutes separating eyelids. Seek medical attention
Skin Contact: Wash with soap and water for 15 minutes.
Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If breathing stops,
administer artificial respiration. Seek medical attention immediately. Provide chemical label and
MSDS if possible.
Ingestion: Remove dentures and clear mouth. Call physician or poison control immediately. Provide
chemical label and MSDS information if possible.
Section 4 : Fire and Explosion Data
Flammability: Flammable
Flash Point: Not Available
Combustion Products: Toxic carbon oxides (CO, CO2) and nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2)
Extinguishing Media: Carbon Dioxide, Dry chemical powder, Water
Special Firefighting Procedures: Use self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing to
prevent contact with skin and eyes.
Unusual Fire/Explosion Hazards: As with all finely divided organic powders, it is advisable to
eliminate explosion hazards with methods such as grounding mechanical equipment to prevent
static charge, inerting the atmosphere, or controlling dust levels.
Section 5 : Spill or Leak Procedures
Cleanup Procedures: Rinse spills down the drain with water
Waste Disposal Method: Rinse waste water down the drain. Degradation by strong alkali is very rapid
but generates diazomethane, which is toxic.
Section 6 : Storage and Handling Precautions
Protective Equipment: For spill clean up, goggles, lab coat, gloves and an MSHA/NIOSH
approved respirator should be worn to avoid contact.
Storage and Handling: Avoid generating dust. Avoid contact with skin eyes and clothing. Wash
thoroughly after handling. Launder exposed clothing before reuse. Store at below 4癈,
Hazardous decomposition may occur if product is stored at room temperature. Protect from light.
Section 7 : Physical Data
Appearance: Ivory or Tan Crystalline Powder Odor: Not Available
Molecular Weight: 265.22 Taste: Not Available
Boiling Point: Not Available Melting Point: 115癈 (decomposes)
Solubility: Alcohols or Ketones or Water Vapor Density: Negligible
Specific Gravity: Not Available Vapor Pressure: Negligible
Volatility: Negligible
Section 8 : Stability and Reactivity Data
Stability: This material is stable if stored as directed Store below 4癈!
Conditions to Avoid: Exposure to light
Incompatibles: None known
Hazardous Polymerization: This product is characterized by a strong exotherm beginning at 108癈.
The gas which is evolved accounts for approximately 38% of the sample. The heat given off
during thermal decomposition indicates that the product should be stored at temperatures no
higher then 4癈 since the first trace of decomposition would quickly raise the temperature of the
material resulting in "runaway" decomposition.
The above information is believed to be correct but does not purport to be complete and should be used only as a guide. The burden of
safe use of this material rests entirely with the user.
