SECTION V - HEALTH HAZARD DATA
THRESHOLD LIMIT VALUE
No data, but limit for caustic soda is 2 mg./ M3 (ACGIH-1970)

EFFECTS OF OVEREXPOSURE
May cause severe burns to skin. Rapidly causes severe damage to eyes. Ingestion will damage tissues and can be fatal.
Inhalation of mist may cause damage to respiratory tract.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES
Speed in removal of caustic is of primary importance. Flush skin with large amounts of water. Continue washing up to 1 to 2
hours or until medical help arrives. Irrigate eyes immediately with copious amounts of water for at least 15 to 30 minutes.
Get physician's treatment at once for eyes, skin burns and when ingested or inhaled.

SECTION VI - REACTIVITY DATA
CONDITIONS TO AVOID
STABILITY UNSTABLE

STABLE X

INCOMPATIBILITY (Materials to avoid)
Aluminum, zinc, tin, organic chemicals, including chlorinated hydrocarbons, such as trichloroethylene.

HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS

HAZARDOUS
POLYMERIZATION
WILL NOT OCCUR X

SECTION VII - SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES
STEPS TO BE TAKEN IN CASE MATERIAL IS RELEASED OR SPILLED
Dilute and flush away with lots of water. Dilute acid, preferable acetic acid, may be used to neutralize final traces after
flushing. Use care as heat is generated in diluting and neutralizing. Liberal covering of sodium bicarbonate may be used to
remove caustic traces.

WASTE DISPOSAL METHOD
Neutralize with dilute acid, dilute well with water and flush to sewer with plenty of water if permitted by disposal regulations.

SECTION VIII - SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION (Specify type)
Filter type for protection against mists.

LOCAL EXHAUST SPECIAL
VENTILATION As necessary to eliminate mists

MECHANICAL (General) OTHER

PROTECTIVE GLOVES EYE PROTECTION
Rubber, neoprene or vinyl Chemical safety goggles

OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Face shield, hard hats, rubber aprons, shoes, and clothing as necessary to prevent skin contact.

SECTION IX - SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN HANDLING AND STORING
Avoid adding hot water to caustic. In diluting, add caustic carefully to water with stirring as heat is evolved.

OTHER PRECAUTIONS
Information (hazards, fist aid, etc.) is abbreviated due to insufficient space. For more complete coverage, read Chem.
Safety sheet SD-10 on Caustic Potash - available from Manufacturing Chemists Association, 1825 Connecticut Avenue, NW,
Washington, DC. 2000. Will release flammable hydrogen gas when in contact with aluminum, tin, zinc, and their alloys. Can
react violently with some organic chemicals including chlorinated hydrocarbons such as trichloroethylene.
