Glycerol 50 56-81-5 Oral-Rat Inhalation, rat:
LD50: 12,600 >570 mg/m3/1H
mg/kg
Section 3-Hazard Identification
Routes of Entry
Skin Contact Causes skin irritation
Skin Absorption Causes skin irritation
Eye Contact Causes eye irritation
Inhalation Causes respiratory irritation
Ingestion Causes gastrointestinal irritation
[Emergency Overview]
Caution! May cause eye and skin irritation. May cause respiratory and digestive tract irritation. This is expected to be
a low hazard for usual industrial handling.
WHMIS Symbols
N.A.
[Potential Health Effects]
Poison by subcutaneous route. Mildly toxic by ingestion. Human systemic effects by ingestion: headache and nausea
or vomiting. Experimental reproductive effects. Human mutation data reported. A skin and eye irritant. In the form of
mist it is a nuisance particulate and inhalation irritant. Combustible liquid when exposed to heat, flame, or powerful
oxidizers. Mixtures with hydrogen peroxide are highly explosive. Ignites on contact with potassium permanganate,
calcium hypochlorite. Mixture with nitric acid + sulfuric acid forms the explosive glyceryl nitrate. Mixture with
perchloric acid + lead oxide forms explosive perchlorate esters. Confined mixture with chlorine explodes if heated to
70鈥?80潞. Can react violently with acetic anhydride, aniline + nitrobenzene, Ca(OCl)2, CrO3, Cr2O3, F2 + PbO,
phosphorus triiodide, ethylene oxide + heat, KMnO4, K2O2, AgClO4, Na2O2, NaH. Energetic reaction with sodium
hydride. Mixture with nitric acid + hydrofluoric acid is a storage hazard due to gas evolution. To fight fire, use
alcohol foam, CO2, dry chemical. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and fumes.
Section 4-First Aid Measures
Skin Contact Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing
and shoes. Get medical aid if irritation develops or persists. Wash clothing before reuse.
Eye Contact Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower
eyelids. If irritation develops, get medical aid.
Inhalation Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial
respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid if cough or other symptoms
appear.
Ingestion Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Do NOT induce vomiting. If conscious
and alert, rinse mouth and drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Get medical aid if irritation or
symptoms occur.
Section 5-Fire Fighting Measures
Flammable NA
Means of Extinction Use water spray to cool fire-exposed containers. Use agent
most appropriate to extinguish fire. Use water spray, dry
chemical, carbon dioxide, or appropriate foam.

Exposure Limits
ACGIH TLV 10 mg/m3 TWA
OSHA PEL 15 mg/m3 TWA (total dust); 5 mg/m3 TWA (respirable fraction)
Other (specify) N.A.
Engineering Controls (specific)
General Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash
facility and a safety shower. Use adequate ventilation to keep airborne
concentrations low
Local Exhaust A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee

ANSI Z88.2 requirements or European Standard EN 149 must be followed
whenever workplace conditions warrant a respirator's use.
Eye Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described
by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European
Standard EN166. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work

organs. Hypertonic salt solutions can produce violent inflammatory
reactions in the gastrointestinal tract. May cause severe
gastrointestinal tract irritation with nausea, vomiting and possible
burns.
[Emergency Overview]

[Potential Health Effects]
Sodium Chloride -Poison by intraperitoneal and intracervical routes. Moderately toxic by ingestion,
intravenous, and subcutaneous routes. An experimental teratogen. Human systemic effects by ingestion:
blood pressure increase. Human reproductive effects by intraplacental route: terminates pregnancy.
Experimental reproductive effects. Human mutation data reported. A skin and eye irritant. When bulk
sodium chloride is heated to high temperature, a vapor is emitted that is irritating, particularly to the eyes.
Ingestion of large amounts of sodium chloride can cause irritation of the stomach. Improper use of salt
tablets may produce this effect. Potentially explosive reaction with dichloromaleic anhydride + urea.
Electrolysis of mixtures with nitrogen compounds may form the explosive nitrogen trichloride. Reaction
with burning lithium forms the dangerously reactive sodium. The molten salt at 1100潞 reacts explosively
with water. Violent reaction with BrF3. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Cl炉 and
Na2O
Tris - Moderately toxic by ingestion and intravenous routes. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic
fumes of NOx
