Potential Health Effects
EYE: May cause mild irritation upon prolonged exposure.
SKIN CONTACT: May cause mild irritation upon prolonged contact. Prolonged exposure with abraded skin
may cause irreversible damage.
INGESTION: Slightly toxic on ingestion. Ingestion of small amounts is not likely to cause injury. Ingestion
of larger amounts may cause abdominal discomfort or injury.
INHALATION: Dust may cause mild irritation to respiratory tract.
SUBCHRONIC EFFECTS/CARCINOGENICITY: None known. Not listed as a carcinogen or potential
carcinogen by IARC, NTP, OSHA, or ACGIH.

3. C OMP OSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS
Chemical Ingredient (% by Weight) CAS Number
Potassium Bicarbonate 99 - 100% 298-14-6

This MSDS is being offered for information purposes. Potassium bicarbonate is not hazardous under OSHA
Standard 29 CFR 1910.1200. Contains no hazardous ingredients at 1% or more (0.1% for carcinogens) as
listed or defined in 29 CFR 1910.

4. FIRST AID MEASURES
EYES: Immediately flush eyes with a directed stream of water for at least 15 minutes while holding eyelids
apart to insure complete irrigation of all eye and lid tissues. IF IRRITATION PERSISTS GET MEDICAL
AT TEN TION IMMEDIATELY.
SKIN: Wash thoroughly with soap and water. IF IRRITA TION OCCURS GET MEDICAL AT TENTION
IMMEDIATELY.

INHALATION: If symptoms develop, get person out of contaminated area to fresh air.
INGESTION: If over exposure occurs, do not induce vomiting. If the patient is conscious and can swallow,
give water to drink. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
NOTE TO PHYSICIAN: Large doses may produce systemic alkalosis and expansion in extracellular fluid
volume with edema.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES FLAMMABLE PROPERTIES FLAMMABLE
LIMITS
FLASHPOINT: Not combustible LFL: Not combustible
METHOD USED: Not applicable UFL: Not combustible

EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Non-combustible material. Use extinguishing media appropriate for surrounding
fire.
FIRE-FIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS: Carbon Dioxide may be generated making necessary the use of
self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and full protective equipment (Bunker Gear). Carbon Dioxide is
an asphyxiant at levels over 5% w/w. Potassium Oxide, another decomposition product existing at
temperatures above 850掳C is a respiratory, eye and skin irritant. Avoid inhalation, eye and skin contact
with Potassium Oxide dusts.
UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS: None known

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Scoop and sweep up all spilled product and other contaminated materials and place in marked disposal
containers. If possible, clean up the spill area on a dry basis and then flush with plenty of water.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Store in cool, dry areas and away from incompatible substances. Potassium Bicarbonate reacts with acids to yield
carbon dioxide gas, which can accumulate in confined spaces. Do not enter confined spaces until they have been
well ventilated and carbon dioxide and oxygen levels have been determined to be safe.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: NIOSH/MSHA approved dust respirator, following manufacturer's
recommendations, should be used as a precautionary measure if total dust level exceeds 10 mg/m3 .
PROTECTIVE GLOVES: General purpose gloves such as cotton for handling dry product. Impervious gloves
such as neoprene when working with solutions.
EYE PROTECTION: Wear safety glasses with side shields. Do not wear contact lenses.
OTHER PROTECTIVE CLOTHING OR EQUIPMENT: Full cover clothing. Apron where splashing may
occur when working with solutions. Eye wash facility should be in close proximity.
PROTECTIVE WORK/HYGIENIC PRACTICES: No special requirements.
EXPOSURE LIMITS: PEL = Not established TLV = Not established

9. PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
APPEARANCE: White crystalline powder
ODOR: None.
