There are no occupational exposure limits established at this time. Since this material may be irritating to
skin and mucous membranes, general room ventilation plus local exhaust at points of emission should be
used to maintain levels of airborne contaminants as low as feasibly possible.
PERSONAL PROTECTION
RESPIRATORY:
For emergencies and unknown concentrations, use NIOSH/MSHA approved positive pressure self-
contained breathing apparatus. Utilize respiratory protective equipment in accordance with 29CFR
1910.134 (Respiratory Protection).
For exposure to formaldehyde utilize respiratory protective equipment specified in accordance with
29CFR 1910.1048.
EYE/FACE:
Wear chemical safety goggles plus full-face shield to protect against splashing when appropriate (ANSI
Z87.1).

Emergency shower and eyewash facility should be in close proximity (ANSI Z358.1).
Clothing contaminated with formaldehyde must be cleaned and laundered before reuse. Containers and
storage areas for formaldehyde contaminated clothing and equipment must have labels and signs. The
laundry must be informed regarding potential harmful effects and procedures for safe handling
(29CFR1910.1048).

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Glycerol Formal 4740-78-87 and 5464-28-8
The toxicological properties of this compound have not been investigated.

ACUTE ORAL LD50 : (rat) 800 mg/kg
ACUTE DERMAL LD50 : (rabbit) 270 mg/kg
ACUTE INHALATION LC50 : (rat) 590 mg/m3
PRIMARY SKIN IRRITATION : (rabbit, 24hr) severe
PRIMARY EYE IRRITATION : (rabbit) severe
SKIN SENSITIZATION : (human) positive
In laboratory tests, formaldehyde has been shown to be carcinogenic in rats. There is no conclusive
evidence regarding the carcinogenicity of formaldehyde in man. Formaldehyde is listed by NTP as
reasonably anticipated to be carcinogenic, and by IARC as a Group 2A carcinogen - limited evidence in
humans and sufficient evidence in animals to evaluate carcinogenicity. OSHA, in its formaldehyde
standard (29 CFR 1910.1048) considers formaldehyde to be a potential carcinogen. Formaldehyde is
genotoxic in several in vitro test systems. Prolonged or repeated inhalation exposure may result in
respiratory changes.

Abiotic Persistence:
Atmospheric half-life via photolysis & OH radical reactions is estimated at 1.6-19 hours
Studies indicate that formaldehyde would rapidly degrade in the environment via biotic and abiotic
processes. Formaldehyde is not expected to bioaccumulate significantly in aquatic biota. Data indicates
that formaldehyde is moderately toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates, and has the potential to impact
growth of aquatic plants at relatively low concentrations. Studies indicate that this substance would
rapidly degrade in the environment.
13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS
Waste disposal must be conducted per all applicable local, state and federal regulations. Appropriate
disposal will depend on the nature of each waste material and should be done by a competent and
properly permitted contractor.
