Section III - HEALTH HAZARD DATA
Routes of Entry: Under normal use and with proper controls, Mesna presents little hazard.
Health Hazard (Acute & Chronic): Mesna is a detoxifying agent used to prevent bleeding cystitis
induced by chemotherapy from ifosamide. This product is low in toxicity. Minimal adverse health
effect should occur from routine use of this product.

Signs & Symptoms of Exposure: May cause irritation of eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. In case of
over-exposure by injection, the following effects could occur such as diarrhea, limb pain,
headache, fatigue, nausea, and hypotension. Allergic reaction may also result.

Section IV - FIRST AID MEASURES
Eye Exposure: Flush eyes with large volumes of water for 15 or more minutes.
Skin Exposure: Wash skin with cool, soapy water for 15 or more minutes.
Ingestion: If ingestion occurs, do not induce vomiting. Call physician or poison control center. If
available, administer activated charcoal (6-8 heaping teaspoon) in two to three glasses of water
and seek medical attention immediately. Never induce vomiting on an unconscious person.
Inhalation: If difficulty breathing, administer oxygen. Seek attention of a physician immediately.
If necessary, provide artificial respiration.

based and is not expected to present a fire hazard concern.

Release to Land: Absorb Mesna with absorbent materials and dispose according to local, state,and
federal guidelines.

Release to Water: Refer to local water authority. Drain disposal is not recommended; however, refer to
local, state, and federal disposal guidelines.

Wear latex or nitrile gloves and safety glasses when cleaning spills. A dust/mist respirator (N95)
may be necessary if excessive aerosols are generated.

and federal rules.

1910.134.
