DESCRIPTION of PRODUCT and EFFECT
OUTDOOR USE ONLY
A plastic bottle approximately 70mm in diameter and 145mm in length (0.5Kg), 135mm in diameter and 205mm in
length (1.0 Kg) and 175mm in diameter or 255mm in length (2.0 Kg) and capped with a black plastic cap. Inside the
each bottle is a burster unit consisting of a cardboard tube sealed at both ends with a cork. Two igniter wires protrude
from one end of the burster unit and through the plastic lid of the bottle and sealed in place with glue. The burster unit
contains 4g (0.5 Kg type), 10g (1.0 Kg type) and 14g (2.0 Kg type) of a flash powder. A flammable chemical that is
held within the plastic bottle surrounds the central burster.
On ignition these devices instantaneously produce a loud report*, cloud of black smoke and a ball of red fire
approximately 3m (0.5 Kg type), 4m (1.0 Kg type) and 6m (2.0 Kg type) in diameter, plastic debris is also produced as
the plastic casing fractures. Careful consideration of the noise levels and the heat produced by these devices must be
taken when choosing the firing position.
* The peak sound level of these devices has been recorded at 105 dB(A) (0.5 Kg type), 107dB(A) (1.0 Kg type) and
110dB(A) (2.0 Kg type) from a distance of 10metres recorded on a still day out of doors. The readings given are an
average of three readings taken. The peak sound level given for each device is liable to change depending on the
conditions the device is fired in.
USER INSTRUCTIONS
INTENDED FOR PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY BY PERSONS OVER 18 YEARS OF AGE.
The manufacturer will entertain no liability of any sort where their pyrotechnics are used with unauthorised firing
systems and device holders. Any authorised equipment will have written approval from the manufacturer.
It is essential that a risk assessment be carried out prior to the use of any pyrotechnic effect, taking into consideration
the location of the members of the audience, crew and performers with respect to the effect produced by the device
when in the firing location.
ENSURE that all pyrotechnic devices can be observed before and during firing in order that nothing has changed with
regards to the location i.e. personnel too close, scenery moved etc. DO NOT FIRE if any personnel become too close to
the device.
It is recommended that tests be carried out without any personnel present in a totally safe environment, to ensure that
the effect produced is that required. Where decibel levels are indicated it is advised that readings can change according
to environmental conditions and it is essential that operators bear this in mind when using these devices. If the operator
is unsure as to the nature of the effect produced by a device then we recommend that the device be tested out of doors
first, employing all relevant safety equipment including ear defenders and safety glasses.
DO NOT SMOKE at any time when dealing with pyrotechnic devices.
IN THE EVENT OF A MIS-FIRE / DISPOSAL INSTRUCTIONS: If the device fails to fire, isolate the effect from
the firing system. Check that the circuit has been connected correctly and repeat the firing sequence. If unsuccessful
disconnect the firing circuit again, remove the device from its firing position and return to its original packaging in
isolation and return to Place of purchase / the manufacturer for disposal. DO NOT place in a fire or consign to normal
waste.
FORMULATION AND PHYSICAL APPEARANCE OF EXPLOSIVE: (refers to un-fired device)
The burster unit contains a free flowing grey powder consisting of Potassium Perchlorate and Aluminium Powder. The
burster unit is surrounded by Naphthalene, a white crystalline solid.
EXPOSURE LIMITS: (refers to composition before firing)
Burster Composition
8-hour TWA total inhalable dust. 10mg / cubic metre
8-hour TWA total respirable dust. 4mg / cubic metre
Naphthalene
8 Hours (TWA) 10 ppm 53 mg/cubic metre
15 Minutes (TWA) 15 ppm 80 mg/cubic metre
INHALATION OF SMOKE PRODUCED FROM THE EFFECT SHOULD BE AVOIDED. EXCESSIVE SMOKE
INHALATION MAY CAUSE RESPIRATORY IRRITATION, DIFFICULTY IN BREATHING, HEADACHES,
NAUSEA AND MAY RESULT IN VOMITING. IN NORMAL USE WITH ADEQUATE VENTILATION THE
SMOKE PRODUCED SHOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM. HOWEVER ANY PERSON FOUND TO BE SUFFERING
FROM SMOKE INHALATION SHOULD BE REMOVED TO FRESH AIR AND MEDICAL ASSISTANCE
SOUGHT.
STORAGE CONDITIONS: Store in a cool dry place, humidity should preferably be less than 70%. Avoid extreme
temperatures. In particular sub-zero temperatures where freezing and re-thaw can alter the performance of the article.
A local Authority permit may be required for storage in bulk. The local Trading Standards Department should be
consulted for further details.
EMERGENCY PROCEEDURES
SPILLAGE: Sweep up any loose powder and packaging, dispose of by following the disposal instructions.
FIRE: Cool Pyrotechnic devices and / or packages with water and remove them if possible.
