HEALTH HAZARD

ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS
Hazard relates to dust released by sawing, cutting, sanding,
trimming or other finishing operations.

SWALLOWED

Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments.
The dust is discomforting to the gastro-intestinal tract and may be harmful if
swallowed in quantity.
Ingestion may result in nausea, abdominal irritation, pain and diarrhoea.

EYE

The dust is discomforting and may be abrasive to the eyes and may cause
redness and swelling.

SKIN

The dust is discomforting to the skin if exposure is prolonged
and may cause drying of skin, which may lead to dermatitis
from repeated exposures over long periods.

INHALED

The dust may be discomforting to the upper respiratory tract and lungs
and may be harmful from repeated exposures over long periods.
Inhalation of dust may aggravate a pre-existing condition
such as asthma, bronchitis, emphysema.
Persons with impaired respiratory function, airway diseases and conditions
such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis, may incur further disability if
excessive concentrations of particulate are inhaled.
Effects on lungs are significantly enhanced in the presence of respirable
particles.

CHRONIC HEALTH EFFECTS
Primary route of exposure is usually by inhalation of generated dust.
Long term exposure to high dust concentrations may cause changes
in lung function i.e. pneumoconiosis; caused by particulates less than
0.5 micron penetrating and remaining in the lung. Prime symptom is
breathlessness; lung shadows how on X-ray.
Prolonged skin contact may cause sensitisation in some individuals
and may lead to redness

FIRST AID

SWALLOWED

DO NOT induce vomiting.
Observe the patient carefully. Never give liquid to a person
showing signs of being sleepy or with reduced awareness,
i.e. becoming unconscious. Give water (or milk) to rinse
out mouth. Then provide liquid slowly and as much as
casualty can comfortably drink. Seek medical advice.

HEALTH HAZARD continued鈥?

EYE

If this product comes in contact with the eyes:
Immediately hold the eyes open and wash with fresh running water.
Ensure irrigation under the eyelids by occasionally lifting upper and lower
lids. If pain persists or recurs seek medical attention.
Removal of contact lenses after an eye injury should only be undertaken by
skilled personnel.

SKIN

Brush off dust.
If product comes in contact with the skin:
Wash affected areas thoroughly with water (and soap if available).
Seek medical attention in event of irritation.

INHALED

If dust is inhaled, remove to fresh air.
Encourage patient to blow nose to ensure clear breathing passages. Rinse
mouth with water. Consider drinking water to remove dust from throat.
If irritation or discomfort persists seek medical attention.

ADVICE TO DOCTOR
Treat symptomatically.

PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

EXPOSURE STANDARDS
None assigned. Refer to individual constituents.

containing no asbestos and <1% crystalline silica:
ES TWA: 10 mg/m3 inspirable dust
TLV TWA: 10 mg/m3 total dust (synthetic nonfibrous) A4
NOTE: This substance has been classified by the ACGIH as A4
NOT classifiable as causing Cancer in humans.
Although in vitro studies indicate that calcium silicate is more toxic than
substances described as 鈥渘uisance dusts鈥? it is thought that adverse
health effects which might occur following exposure to 10-20 mg/m3
Are likely to be minimal. The TLV-TWA is thought to be protective
against the physical risk of eye and upper respiratory tract irritation in
workers and to prevent interference with vision and deposition of
particulate in the eyes, ears, nose and mouth.

vermiculite, containing no asbestos, as mica:
TLV TWA: 3 mg/m3 respirable dust.
The concentration of respirable dust for application of this limit is to
be determined from the fraction that penetrates a separator whose size
collection efficiency is described by a cumulative lognormal function with
a median aerodynamic volume of 4.0 urn (+-) 0.3 urn and with a geometric
standard deviation of 1.5 urn (+-) 0.1 urn, i.e. less than 5 um.
ES TWA: 2.5 mg/m3 inspirable dust (Under review)

TLV TWA: 3 mg/m3 respirable dust.
ES TWA: 2.5 mg/m3 inspirable dust.
The TLV-TWA is thought to be sufficiently low to prevent changes in

pre-employment chest X-ray findings in employees exposed, in some cases,
to decades of exposure. The limit is protective against disabling
pneumoconiosis.

collection efficiency is described by a cumulative lognormal function with
a median aerodynamic volume of 4.0 um (+-) 0.3 um and with a geometric

ENGINEERING CONTROLS
Use in a well-ventilated area.
Hazard relates to dust released by sawing, cutting, sanding, trimming
or other finishing operations.
If exposure to workplace dust is not controlled, respiratory protection
is required; wear SAA approved dust respirator.
General exhaust is adequate under normal conditions.
If risk of overexposure exists, wear SAA approved dust respirator.
Correct respirator fit is essential to obtain adequate protection.
Avoid generating and breathing dust.
Good ventilation and effective dust extraction is required when using
cutting tools or when sanding.
Wear a disposable dust mask AS 1715-1991 Class P1 or P2 when machining

PERSONAL PROTECTION

EYE

When sawing, machining or sanding use safety glasses with side shields.
Contact lenses pose a special hazard; soft lenses absorb irritants and all lenses
concentrate them.

HANDS/FEET

Barrier cream and Cotton gloves or
Protective gloves, e.g. leather.
Wear safety footwear.

OTHER
Overalls.
Eyewash unit.
Loose fitting protective clothing, overalls, long sleeve shirts.
When working above head height, use head covering, dust mask, and goggles.
Minimise dust generation by using sharp hand cutting tools where possible.
Powered tools (eg saws etc.) should only be used if fitted with dust
extraction and containment equipment.
Vacuum cleaners should be available for fibre/dust removal.

RESPIRATOR
Selection of the Class and Type of respirator will depend upon the level of
breathing zone contaminant and the chemical nature of the contaminant.
Protection Factors (defined as the ratio of contaminant outside and inside
the mask) may also be important.

Breathing Zone Maximum Half-face Full-Face
Level ppm (volume) Protection Factor Respirator Respirator
1000 10 -AUS P -
1000 50 - -AUS P
5000 50 Airline * -
5000 100 - -2 P
10000 100 - -3 P
100+ - Airline**
*Continuous Flow **- Continuous-flow or positive pressure demand.
The local concentration of material, quantity and conditions of use determine
the type of personal protective equipment required. For further information,
consult site specific CHEMWATCH data (if available), or your Occupational
Health and Safety Advisor.
