concentrations. Gas may accumulate in confined or poorly ventilated areas, dis- placing oxygen and
causing unconsciousness or death. Eye and skin contact may cause irritation. Use only with
adequate ventilation.

FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS:
The majority of this product constitutes a nonflammable, inert gas. Containers may rupture or explode from
pressure when exposed to heat or flames.

EXTINGUISHING MEDIA:
Any, Use media appropriate for surrounding fire.

FIRE FIGHTING INSTRUCTION:
Continue to cool surrounding containers until well after flames are extinguished. Firefighters should wear a full-
facepiece, NIOSH/MSHA-approved self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) operated in positive pressure
mode and full turnout gear.

If flame is extinguished and flow of gas continues, increase ventilation to prevent flammable mixture formation
in low areas or pockets.

6. Accidental Release Measures
Isolate hazard area, evacuate personnel and deny entry to unauthorized/unprotected individuals. Personnel
entering area should wear appropriate protective equipment including respiratory protection suitable for
unknown concentrations. Stop the flow of gas if it can be done without risk. Ventilate enclosed spaces.
Personnel should not re-enter hazard area until adequate oxygen is re-established. If a leak is in user鈥檚
equipment, be certain to purge piping with an inert gas prior to attempting repairs. If leak is in container or

container valve, contact the appropriate emergency telephone number listed in Section 1 or call your closest
BOC location.

7. Handling and Storage
Electrical classification:
Nonhazardous.

Use only in well-ventilated areas. Valve protection caps must remain in place unless container is secured with
valve protection outlet piped to use point. Do not drag, slide or roll cylinders. Use a suitable hand truck for
cylinder movement. Use a pressure reducing regulator when connecting cylinder to lower pressure (< 3000
psig) piping or systems. Do not heat cylinder by any means to increase the discharge rate of product from the
cylinder. Use a check valve or trap in the discharge line to prevent hazardous back flow into the cylinder.

Protect cylinders from physical damage. Store in cool, dry, well-ventilated area of non-combustible construction
away from heavily trafficked areas and emergency exits. Do not allow the temperature where cylinders are
stored to exceed 125 掳F. Cylinders should be stored upright and firmly secured to prevent FALLING OR
BEING KNOCKED OVER. Use a 鈥渇irst in-first out鈥? inventory system to prevent full cylinders being stored for
excessive periods of time.

For additional recommendations, consult Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet P-1 and G-12.

Stationary customer site vessels should operate in accordance with the manufacturer's and BOC鈥檚 instruction. Do
not attempt to repair, adjust or in any other way modify the operation of these vessels. If there is a malfunction
or other type of operations problem with the vessel, contact the closest BOC location immediately.

Never carry a compressed gas cylinder or a container of a gas in cryogenic liquid form in an enclosed space such
as a car trunk, van or station wagon. A leak can result in a fire, explosion, asphyxiation or a toxic exposure.

11. Toxicological Information

EYE EFFECTS:
Eye irritation of the human eye is detectable at 50 ppm acetaldehyde. Excessive irritation for chronic industrial
exposure generally occurs above 200 ppm acetaldehyde. Changes in light sensitivity of the eye were reported in
humans exposed to 0.012 mg/m3 acetaldehyde.

SKIN EFFECTS:
500 mg Acetaldehyde applied to rabbit skin (500 mg open) produced effects described as mild without further
qualification.

ACUTE ORAL EFFECTS:
LD50: 661 mg/kg for acetaldehyde (oral; rat).
LD50: 900 mg/kg for acetaldehyde (oral; mouse)

ACUTE INHALATION EFFECTS:
LC50: 20100 mg/m3 for acetaldehyde (inhalation; mammal)

CHRONIC:
Acetaldehyde has produced tumors and cancer in long-term experiments involving animals.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies acetaldehyde as possibly carcinogenic to
humans. The National Toxicology Program (NTP) considers acetaldehyde reasonably anticipated to be a
carcinogen. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) considers
acetaldehyde an animal carcinogen.

OTHER:
Acetaldehyde has been active in short-term assays for DNA damage and repair, mutagenicity, chromosome
aberrations, sister chromatid exchanges, micronucleus test and oncogenic transformation.

12. Ecological Information

ENVIRONMENTAL FATE:
Acetaldehyde occurs as a natural product of combustion and photooxidation of atmospheric hydrocarbons and
produced photochemically in surface water. Release into water and land results in rapid volatilization and
degradation (Half life - 3 H for typical river). Atmospheric degradation of acetaldehyde occurs in a matter of
hours via reaction with hydroxyl radicals and photolysis.

13. Disposal Considerations
Do not attempt to dispose of waste or unused quantities. Return in the shipping container PROPERLY
LABELED, WITH ANY VALVE OUTLET PLUGS OR CAPS SECURED AND VALVE PROTECTION CAP
IN PLACE to BOC Gases or authorized distributor for proper disposal.

Acetaldehyde is listed as a RCRA hazardous waste U001 (40 CFR 261.33).
