Superhydrophobicity Experiment

Statement of Chemical Safety & Procedures

Prepared by Douglas Friedman
dougf@chem.ucla.edu

Enclosed in this document are the following:

1) Statement of Safety, Procedures, & Considerations for UCLA/CNSI Outreach
Program Superhydrophobicity Experiment Chemicals
2) MSDS for 11-mercapto-1-undecanol
3) MSDS for 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecanethiol
Statement of Safety, Procedures, & Considerations for UCLA/CNSI Outreach Program
Superhydrophobicity Experiment Chemicals

I. Chemicals Used

The following 2 chemicals will be required for the superhydrophobicity experiment to be
preformed by LAUSD students in chemistry & physics classes:

1) 11-mercapto-1-undecanol (CAS# 73768-92-2)
This chemical will be provided to you as a 1 mM solution in ethanol

2) 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecanethiol (CAS# 34143-74-3)
This chemical will be provided to you as a 1 mM solution in ethanol

The material safety data sheets (MSDS) for each chemical are attached at the end of
this document for reference. Please note, however, that neither you nor the students
will ever be in contact with the neat chemical.

II. Safety Precautions

The following is a list of safety precautions determined to be necessary, after consulting
the MSDS and other sources, which is required when using these chemicals.

All teachers & students must wear nitrile gloves & safety goggles at all times.

Please note that the MSDS refers to a required respirator & fume hood for safe use of
these chemicals. These precautions are only necessary when handling the neat
compounds, NOT the compounds in dilute solution.

III. First Aid

If accidental exposure occurs:

In case of contact of the solution with the eye, immediately flush eyes with copious
amounts of water for at least 15 minutes.

In case of contact with the skin, wash the affected area with soap and copious amounts
of water for at least 10 minutes.

In case of oral exposure, wash mouth with copious amounts of water. Call a physician.
IV. Training

This training session allows you to use these chemicals in the classroom for the
purposes described in the manuals. This session will be run based on LAUSD
requirements. This training will include, but is not limited to, discussion of the
importance of personal protective equipment and first aid procedures in case of
accidental contact.

V. Chemical Safety

Neither of these chemicals are known teratogens, carcinogens, or mutagens. They are
NOT on the California State Proposition 65 list of known teratogens or carcinogens.

VI. Storage

If you choose to keep the solutions for use in subsequent years and future classes
please store all ethanol-based solutions in a flammable cabinet. Please label all
Outreach Chemicals with your name and contact information so the solutions may be
identified by LAUSD-OEHS.

VII. Disposal

These products will be used to build a monolayer on a copper surface. These copper
surfaces can be disposed of in the garbage.

The solutions must not be poured down the drain. There are two possibilities for
disposal.

1) If the solution still contains the thiol, it may be returned to UCLA for disposal. To
arrange for someone to meet you at the Chemistry Department at UCLA to pick
up the leftover material, please contact Doug Friedman (dougf@chem.ucla.edu)
or Prof. Sarah Tolbert (tolbert@chem.ucla.edu)
2) If the solution no longer contains the thiol, it may be poured down the drain. At
this point, the solution is pure ethanol, and may be discarded safely.

In order to determine if the thiol is still present in solution, you will run the experiment
with one modification. Run the experiment as directed, with the following change:

Allow the silver coated copper piece to sit in the thiol solution for 20
minutes prior to rinsing.

After 20 minutes, rinse the copper as directed, then test the surface per previous
instruction. If the surface does not display superhydrophobic/philic character as
expected, you may discard the remaining ethanol down the drain. If not, DO NOT pour
the remaining ethanol down the drain as it still contains thiol. It may be returned to
UCLA.
