II HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
Repeated or prolonged exposure to organophosphates
Health Effects may result in the same effects as acute exposure, including
the delayed symptoms (see below).
Other effects reported in workers repeatedly exposed
include impaired memory and concentration, disorientation,
severe depressions, irritability, confusion, headache,
speech difficulties, delayed reaction times, nightmares,
sleepwalking and drowsiness or insomnia.
An influenza-like condition with headache, nausea,
weakness, loss of appetite, and malaise has also been
reported.
The ingredients are not listed as carcinogenic in Worksafe鈥檚
document 鈥淓xposure Standards for Atmospheric
Contaminants in the Occupational Environment鈥? (May
1995).
Dimethoate is toxic by ingestion, inhalation and dermal
Acute Effects absorption. As with all organophosphates, Dimethoate is
readily absorbed through the skin.
Skin which has come in contact with this material should be
Skin
washed immediately with soap and water and all
contaminated clothing should be removed.
Organophosphates are easily absorbed through the lungs.
Inhalation:
Persons with respiratory ailments, recent exposure to
cholinesterase inhibitors, impaired cholinesterase
production, or with liver malfunction may be at increased
risk from exposure to Dimethoate. High environmental
temperatures or exposure of Dimethoate to visible or UV
light may enhance its toxicity.
Dimethoate is not irritating to the eyes of lab animals.
Severe eye irritation has occurred in workers manufacturing

Organophosphate insecticides are cholinesterase
Contact / inhibitors. They are toxic by all routes of exposure. When
Absorption inhaled, the first effects are usually respiratory and may
include bloody or runny nose, coughing, chest discomfort,
Ingestion: difficult or short breath, and wheezing due to constriction or
excess fluid in the bronchial tubes.
Skin Skin contact with organophosphates may cause localised
sweating and involuntary muscle contractions.
Eye contact will cause pain, bleeding, tears, pupil
Eye Contact:
constriction, and blurred vision.
Following exposure by any route, other systemic effects
may begin within a few minutes or be delayed for up to 12
General hours. These may include pallor, nausea, vomiting,
symptoms of diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, headache, dizziness, eye
pain, blurred vision, constriction or dilation of the eye
poisoning: pupils, tears, salivation, sweating, and confusion.

Severe poisoni ng will affect the central nervous system,
producing incoordination, slurred speech, loss of reflexes,
Immediate weakness, fatigue, involuntary muscle contractions,
twitching, tremors of the tongue or eyelids, and eventually
paralysis of body extremities and respiratory muscles. In
severe cases there may be involuntary defecation or
urination, psychosis, irregular heartbeats,
unconsciousness, convulsions and coma.
Death may be caused by respiratory failure or cardiac
arrest.
Some organophosphates may cause delayed symptoms
beginning 1 to 4 weeks after an acute exposure, which may
or may not have produced immediate symptoms. In such
Delayed
cases, numbness, tingling, weakness and cramping may
symptoms appear in the lower limbs and progress to incoordination
and paralysis. Improvement may occur over months or
years, but some residual impairment will remain.
Primary route of exposure is inhalation and skin and
eye contact.

A time weighted average (TWA) has been established for
Exposure
Cyclohexanone, present in significant quantities in this product.
Limits &
This value is 100mg/m3 . The corresponding STEL level is "not
Exposure
set". The STEL (Short Term Exposure Limit) is an exposure
Standards: value that should not be exceeded for more than 15 minutes
and should not be repeated for more than 4 times per day.
There should be at least 60 minutes between successive
exposures at the STEL. The exposure value at the TWA is the
average airborne concentration of a particular substance when
calculated over a normal 8-hour working day for a 5-day
working week. See ingredients section on page 1 of this data
sheet. The ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) for Dimethoate is set
at 0.02mg/kg/day. The corresponding NOEL (No-observable-
effect-level) is set at 0.2 (H) mg/kg/day. Values taken from
Australian ADI List, May 1995.

Respiratory Protection: If there is a significant chance of
Personal
dusts, vapours or mists accumulating in the area where
Protection:
this product is being used, a mask or respirator should
be used. For help in selecting suitable equipment,
consult AS/NZS 1715.
Protective Gloves: Impermeable protective gloves must be
worn when you are using this product, since absorption
through the skin is likely to lead to serious harm. All
skin areas should be covered. Glove selection can be
made on the basis of the following resistance for

V OTHER INFORMATION
Dimethoate is moderately to very highly toxic to birds. In
Effects on
Japanese quail, a 5-day dietary LC50 of 341 ppm is reported.
Birds:
It may be very highly toxic to other birds; reported acute oral
LD50 values are 41.7 to 63.5 mg/kg in mallards and 20.0 mg/kg
in pheasants. Birds are not able to metabolize dimethoate as
rapidly as mammals do, which may account for its relatively
higher toxicity in these species.

Dimethoate is moderately toxic to fish, with reported LC50
