How to fill the safety data sheet
The safety data sheet allows us to realize the experiment sheet. This experiment sheet classifies the
hazard level of the experiment in three categories : green (no risk), orange (small risk), red (important risk). The
experiment sheet is used by the security officer to anticipate any incident or accident that he may have to face
to, as well as the safety equipment he will use in case of emergency.
The experiment sheet is realised by "non-chemist" staff of CLIO, it is thus very important to be as
precise and exhaustive in the description of the chemicals as possible.
The safety data sheet is made of several parts. The first one is a resume of all the hazards that can
happen in the experiment room during the project : chemicals, lasers, cryogenic fluids.
The following part ; "Use of the chemistry laboratory", points out whether the experiment implies to
use the chemistry laboratory facilities or not. In the first case, one has to explain briefly the protocol that will be
used in the chemistry lab (example : "monocrystal polishing, surface cleaning with sulfuric acid, nanoparticle
adsorption by soaking. Work under hood, use of gloves and safety glasses"). The list of chemicals brought
in the laboratory has to be written in the table, with the name of the products, the chemical formula and
the CAS number if available (NB : The CAS number is a unique identifier for a large amount of chemicals
that can be found on the MSDS of the product. Example : d-proline, formula C5H9NO2, CAS 344-25-2 et l-
proline, formula C5H9NO2, CAS 147-85-3. For further details : http://www.cas.org). The table must include the
form (solid, liquid, powder...), the quantity and the way of destruction of the product if relevant.
The last paragraph, "In the experimental room", concerns only the experiment room. It must include, if
necessary, the material brought in the room (Example : UHV chamber, ionic pump, HT power supply.
Emergency stop for the HT). It also has to contain the complete list of chemicals that will be in the room
during the experiment, in a table identical as the first one, with the name of the products, the chemical
formula and the CAS number if available(Example : nitrogen monoxide, NO, CAS 10102-43-9, gas, toxic, B0
bottle, room temperature and pressure, no waste : toxic gas extraction).
NB : it is important to give the list of all products brought either in the chemistry lab or in the
experiment room, whatever the quantity and the risk (or innocuousness) of the product are. No "judgment"
will be brung on the experiment from the angle of the risks. The only aim of the security sheet is to
summarize the informations on the risks and the prevention of these risks. In the example, as we know that
nitrogen monoxide will be used, we can foresee to have a NO detector in the room).
The processing of the sheet consists in analyzing the risks in the room and their range, by verifying the
risks per product (by the mean of the toxicological indices or the material safety data sheet provided with the
product or found on the Internet). Once made, the sheet contains the informations necessary for emergency
case. You can provide the MSDS of your products in order to make this analysis easier.
The safety data sheet is an "acrobat" form, that can be filled with your Acrobat Reader software, then
printed or saved if possible. It can also be provided in "doc" format, to be completed with MS-Office or
OpenOffice.
You can use the following examples to fill the sheets. These are only examples and can sound strange to
the research workers ! Finally, do not hesitate to contact the person in charge of the beamline or the "CLIO
ACMO*" for any question concerning these sheets.
Thank you for your understanding.
