Emergency overview
WARNING: Wood dusts may form explosive mixtures with air in the presence of an ignition source. Irritating
to eyes, respiratory system and skin.
Potential health effects
Primary routes of exposure
Routes of entry for solids and liquids include eye and skin contact, ingestion and inhalation. Routes of entry
for gases include inhalation and eye contact. Skin contact may be a route of entry for liquified gases.
Acute toxicity:
Overexposure to the eyes may cause irritation, redness, scratching of the cornea, and tearing. Ingestion of
wood or wood dust is unlikely. If ingestion does occur, slight gastrointestinal irritation may result. Wood dust
is irritating to the nose, throat and lungs. Overexposure via inhalation may cause nasal dryness, deposits or
obstructions in the nasal passages, coughing, sneezing, dryness and soreness of throat and sinuses,
hoarseness, and wheezing.
Irritation:
Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin. Wood dust may cause irritation to the eyes. Mechanical
rubbing may increase skin irritation.
Sensitization:
Some wood species may cause dermatitis or allergic skin reactions in sensitized individuals. Some wood
species may cause allergic respiratory reactions with asthma-like symptoms in sensitized individuals.
Repeated dose toxicity:

Version: 1.0 (181861/MDS_GEN_US/EN)
Prolonged and/or repeated contact with treated or untreated wood dust may cause irritation to the skin.
Prolonged or repeated inhalation of wood dusts may cause respiratory irritation, recurrent bronchitis and
prolonged colds. Prolonged exposure to wood dust by inhalation has been reported to be associated with
nasal and paranasal cancer.
4. First-aid measures
If inhaled:
Remove the affected individual into fresh air and keep the person calm. Assist in breathing if necessary.
Seek medical attention if necessary.
If on skin:
Wash affected areas thoroughly with soap and water. If irritation develops, seek medical attention.
If in eyes:
In case of contact with the eyes, rinse immediately for at least 15 minutes with plenty of water. Seek medical
attention. Do not rub the eyes.
If swallowed:
Do not induce vomiting. Immediate medical attention required.
5. Fire-fighting measures
Flash point: Not applicable
Autoignition: Not applicable
Suitable extinguishing media:
water
Additional information:
Wood dusts may form explosive mixtures with air in the presence of an ignition source.
Wood is combustible.
Hazards during fire-fighting:
Vapors and/or decomposition products are irritants and/or toxic.
Protective equipment for fire-fighting:
Firefighters should be equipped with self-contained breathing apparatus and turn-out gear.
NFPA Hazard codes:
Health : 1 Fire: 1 Reactivity: 0 Special:
6. Accidental release measures
Personal precautions:
Ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid dust formation. Wear suitable personal protective clothing and
equipment. Wear appropriate respiratory protection. Do not breathe dust.

Cleanup:
Wet down accumulated dusts prior to sweeping or vacuuming to prevent explosion hazards. Sweep up or
vacuum small pieces and dusts and place in appropriate container for disposal. Gather larger pieces using
by an appropriate method. Place into suitable container for disposal. Avoid raising dust. Ensure adequate
ventilation.
For small amounts: Dampen, pick up mechanically and dispose of.
For large amounts: Wet down dust with water spray jet.
Further information:
No containment procedures are needed, as this product cannot spill or leak the preservative.
7. Handling and storage
Handling
General advice:
Avoid dust formation. Wear suitable personal protective clothing and equipment. Handle in accordance with
good industrial hygiene and safety practice.
Storage
General advice:
Keep away from sources of ignition - No smoking.
8. Exposure controls and personal protection
Components with workplace control parameters

Advice on system design:
Provide local exhaust ventilation to control dust.
Personal protective equipment
Respiratory protection:
Breathing protection if dusts are formed.
Hand protection:
Gloves of thick material, Suitable materials, Leather gloves
Eye protection:
Wear safety goggles (chemical goggles) if there is potential for airborne dust exposures.

Chronic toxicity
Carcinogenicity:
IARC has classified untreated hardwood and hardwood/softwood mix wood dust as a Group I human
carcinogen.
The wood dust classification is based primarily on IARC's evaluation of increased risk in the occurrence of
adenocarcinomas of the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses associated with occupational exposures to
untreated wood dust.
NTP has classified all untreated wood dust as a carcinogen.
