POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS
Product name: Bulk Para-Nitrophenol Page 2 / 8
Solutia Inc. Material Safety Data Sheet Date: 12/07/2004
Reference Number: 000000003095 Version 5./E
Likely routes of exposure: Hazardous by all routes of exposure.
Eye contact: Causes eye burns.
Injury may be permanent.
Skin contact: Causes skin burns.
Injury may be permanent.
May be harmful if absorbed
Inhalation: May be harmful if inhaled.
Ingestion: May be harmful if swallowed.
Target organs/systems: May cause methemoglobinemia, decreasing oxygen in blood
Medical conditions Substance has high potential to cause changes in the blood cells, deceasing the
aggravated by exposure: oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. This condition is called
methemoglobinema. As the condition progresses, oxygen deficiency increases
(cyanosis occurs), producing possible headaches, weakness, irritability,
drowsiness, shortness of breath, and unconsciousness. The appearance of
methemoglobinema may be delayed 6 to 12 hours after exposure.
Refer to Section 11 for toxicological information.
3. COMPOSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS

Notes to physicians: Call a Poison Control Center for guidance. If absorbed, this product may cause
methemoglobinemia which reduces oxygen carrying capacity of blood.
Methemoglobin spontaneously but slowly reverts to hemoglobin after
termination of exposure. Asymptomatic patients with methemoglobin levels
under 30% generally respond to bed rest, oxygen, and supportive care. Patients
with symptoms or with methemoglobin greater than 30% may also respond to
intravenous injection of methylene blue. See package insert for indications,
dosage, and precautions. Repeat methemoglobin level one to two hours after
antidote to assess response. Thorough cleansing of contaminated skin, nails, and
hair is essential to prevent continued absorption and methemoglobin formation.
5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Hazardous products of combustion: carbon monoxide (CO); carbon dioxide; nitrogen oxides (NOx); hydrogen
chloride (HCl); chlorides; smoke; soot
Extinguishing media: Water spray, foam, dry chemical, or carbon dioxide
Unusual fire and explosion hazards: None known
Fire fighting equipment: Firefighters, and others exposed, wear self-contained breathing apparatus.
Equipment should be thoroughly decontaminated after use.
6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Personal precautions: Use personal protection recommended in section 8.
Environmental Keep out of drains and water courses.
precautions:
Methods for cleaning up: Contain large spills with dikes and transfer the material to appropriate containers for
reclamation or disposal. Absorb remaining material or small spills with an inert material
and then place in a chemical waste container. Neutralize washings with soda ash or
lime. Flush spill area with water.
Refer to Section 13 for disposal information and Sections 14 and 15 for reportable quantity information.
7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Handling
Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing.
Do not taste or swallow.
Avoid breathing vapour or mist.
Keep container closed.
Use with adequate ventilation.
Wash thoroughly after handling.
Emptied containers retain vapour and product residue. Observe all recommended safety precautions until container
is cleaned, reconditioned or destroyed. Do not reuse this container.
Storage
General: Store in a cool, well ventilated place away from foodstuffs, reducing agents and acids.
Stable under normal conditions of handling and storage.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
Airborne exposure limits: (ml/m3 = ppm)
Bulk Para-Nitrophenol No specific occupational exposure limit has been established.
Eye protection: Wear chemical goggles.
Have eye wash facilities immediately available at any location where eye contact can
occur.
Hand protection: Care must be taken to prevent skin contact.
Absorption may cause cyanosis and methemoglobinemia.
Wear chemical resistant gloves.
Consult the glove/clothing manufacturer to determine the appropriate type
glove/clothing for a given application.
Body protection: Wear suitable protective clothing.
Consult the glove/clothing manufacturer to determine the appropriate type
glove/clothing for a given application.
Wear full protective clothing if exposed to splashes.
Wash contaminated skin promptly.
Launder contaminated clothing and clean protective equipment before reuse.
Have safety shower available at locations where skin contact can occur.
Wash thoroughly after handling.
Respiratory protection: Avoid breathing vapour or mist.
Use approved respiratory protection equipment (full facepiece recommended) when
airborne exposure is excessive.
If used, full facepiece replaces the need for face shield and/or chemical goggles.
Consult the respirator manufacturer to determine the appropriate type of equipment for
a given application.
Observe respirator use limitations specified by the manufacturer.
Ventilation: Provide natural or mechanical ventilation to minimize exposure.
If practical, use local mechanical exhaust ventilation at sources of air contamination
such as processing equipment.
Components referred to herein may be regulated by specific Canadian provincial legislation. Please refer to exposure
limits legislated for the province in which the substance will be used.
