Health Hazards
Health Effects
Chronic: Possible chronic health effects from exposure to Eclipse are based on studies
using the active ingredient. Metosulam does not cause birth defects nor does it affect
reproduction in rats or rabbits. It does not cause genetic change and does not
accumulate in the body. Prolonged oral administration of high doses of metosulam to rats
and dogs causes kidney toxicity. In rats, lifetime exposure to doses many thousands of
times higher than likely human exposure levels (i.e. 100 mg/kg body weight/day) caused
an increase in kidney tumours. No increase in tumours was seen in rats treated at lower
doses. Metosulam did not cause tumours in mice and dogs fed similar low or high doses.
Prolonged administration of high doses to dogs caused damage to the retina of the eye.
This effect was not seen in mice, rabbits, rats or monkeys, and is not believed to be
relevant to humans. The ingredients are not listed as carcinogenic in NOHSC's document
"Exposure Standards for Atmospheric Contaminants in the Occupational Environment"
(May 1995).
Swallowed
Acute:
The acute oral toxicity is low. The oral LD50 (rat and mouse) is above 5000 mg/kg.
Skin
The acute dermal toxicity is low. The acute dermal LD50 (rabbit) is above 2000 mg/kg.
Eye
Dust particles in the eye may cause slight temporary eye irritation, not different to that
caused by any physical irritation of the eye. In the rabbit eye, metosulam was classified
as a slight irritant.
Inhaled
Under normal application conditions, exposure to the spray mix is very low and any spray
mist inhaled is unlikely to cause health effects.
First Aid
Consult the National Poisons Information Centre - phone 13 11 26 or a doctor in every
case of suspected chemical poisoning. Never give fluids or induce vomiting if a patient is
unconscious or convulsing regardless of cause of injury. If breathing difficulties occur
seek medical attention immediately.
Swallowed
If swallowed contact the Poisons Information Centre or a doctor immediately.
Skin
If on skin, remove contaminated clothing and wash skin thoroughly with soap and water.
Eye
If in eyes, hold eyes open and flood with water for at least 15 minutes and see a doctor.

Health Hazards (Continued)
Inhaled
If affected by dust, remove from contaminated area to fresh air.
Precautions for Use
Exposure Standards
A time weighted average (TWA) concentration for an 8 hour day, and 5 day week has not
been established by NOHSC Australia for any of the major ingredients in this product.
There is a blanket limit of 10 mg/cubic metre for dusts or mists when limits have not
otherwise been established. The nature of this product makes it unlikely that this level will
be approached in normal use. The ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) for metosulam is set at
0.05 mg/kg/day. The corresponding NOEL (No-observable-effect-level) is set at 5
mg/kg/day. Values taken from Australian ADI List, May 1995.
Engineering Controls
In industrial situations, concentration values below the TWA value should be maintained.
Values may be reduced by process modification, use of local exhaust ventilation,
capturing substances at the source, or other methods. If you believe air borne
concentrations of mists, dusts or vapours are high, you are advised to modify the process
or environment to reduce the problem.
Personal Protection
Poisonous if swallowed. Will irritate the eyes. Avoid contact with eyes. If product in eyes
wash it out immediately with water. When opening the container, preparing the spray or
using the prepared spray, wear elbow-length PVC gloves and a face shield or goggles.
After use and before eating, drinking, or smoking, wash hands, arms and face thoroughly
with soap and water. After each day's use, wash gloves and face shield or goggles and
contaminated clothing.
Flammability
Protection Against Fire and Explosion:
Product is stable. Avoid strong oxidising agents. Keep away from sources of ignition.
Not flammable under normal conditions of use.
Safe Handling Information
Storage
This product is an S6 Poison. Observe all relevant regulations regarding sale, transport
and storage of this class of product. Store in the closed original container in a cool, dry,
well-ventilated area, out of direct sunlight. Do not store near food, feedstuffs, fertilisers or
seed.

Dangerous Goods / Hazardous Substances Regulation
This product is subject to the following regulations:
Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Drugs and Poisons
Spills
Prevent spill from spreading or entering waterways or drains. Take up with absorbent
material such as peat, sawdust or chemical binding agent. Fill material along with any
contaminated soil etc. into sealable containers. Clean affected area with an aqueous
detergent and a small amount of water. Absorb this with hydrated lime over the affected
area. On completion of clean-up remove and wash all protective clothing and equipment
with detergent and water. Any heavily contaminated clothing should be placed in a plastic
garbage bag and placed in a sealable drum. Do not smoke, eat or drink during the
clean-up operation.
Disposal
1) After intended use:
Triple or (preferably) pressure rinse container before disposal. Add rinsings to the spray
tank. Do not dispose of undiluted chemicals on site. Break, puncture, crush and bury
rinsed container in a local authority landfill (check local statutory requirements). If not
available, bury the container below 500 mm in a marked disposal pit specifically set up for
this purpose, clear of waterways, vegetation and roots. Empty container and product
should not be burnt.
2) After spill or accident:
Dispose of sealed containers at an approved local waste disposal site.
Fire/Explosion Hazard
Flashpoint: Not flammable
Flammability limits: Not applicable
Extinguishing Media: Dry chemical, foam, water fog.
Stability: This product is unlikely to spontaneously decompose.
Polymerisation: This product is unlikely to spontaneously polymerise.
Materials to avoid: Strong oxidising agents
Further Information:
Special firefighting procedures: When fighting fires involving significant quantities of this
product, wear safety boots, non-flammable overalls, gloves, hat, goggles and self
contained breathing apparatus. All skin areas should be covered.

Other Information
Information on Toxicity
Ecotoxicity Data
Metosulam does not demonstrate any signfiicant toxicity to fish, aquatic organisms, birds,
earthworms and honey bees. Metosulam is highly toxic to blue green algae. Metosulam does not
bioaccumulate in animal systems.
Environmental Fate
Metosulam does not hydrolyse or photodegrade under normal conditions.
In soil, metosulam is quickly degraded by microbial action. The soil half-life ranges between six and
forty seven days, depending on the soil type, organic matter content, microbial activity and climatic
conditions. The half-life is lowest when microbial activity is greatest.
Metosulam has limited potential for runoff, or leaching through soil profiles, but may move in very
sandy soils. Residues are generally confined to the top ten centimetres of a soil profile. In water,
metosulam degrades slowly with an average aerobic half-life of eighty four days and an anaerobic
half-life of ninety days.
If used according to the label directions, Eclipse Herbicide will not be harmful to the environment.
