HEALTH HAZARDS
Health Hazard Slightly corrosive. When added to water, toxic gas may be evolved. This may present a hazard, especially in poorly
ventilated areas. Chronic over exposure may result in respiratory and skin sensitisation. Avoid eye or skin contact
Summary
and dust generation or inhalation.
Eye Slightly corrosive - irritant. Exposure may result in lacrimation, pain, redness and possible corneal burns with
prolonged contact.
Inhalation Irritant - slightly corrosive. Over exposure may result in irritation of the nose and throat, coughing, nausea,
inflammation - ulceration with breathing difficulties. Upon addition to water, corrosive and noxious vapours may be
evolved.
Skin Slightly corrosive - severe irritant. Contact may result in itching, pain, redness, rash and dermatitis. Prolonged
contact may result in burns and possible sensitisation.
Ingestion Slightly corrosive. Ingestion may result in irritation of the gastrointestinal tract, nausea and vomiting. Due to the
oxidation of sulfites in the body to sulfates, sulfites are well tolerated, however with large doses sulfurous acid is
formed. Some individuals may have an allergic reaction.
PRECAUTIONS
Flammability Non flammable. May evolve toxic sulfur oxides when heated to decomposition.
Reactivity Incompatible with oxidising agents (eg. hypochlorites, peroxides) and acids (eg. sulfuric acid). Contact with acids
may liberate toxic sulfur dioxide gas.
Ventilation Do not inhale dusts. Use in well ventilated areas - open doors and windows. In poorly ventilated areas, mechanical
extraction ventilation at source is recommended.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
PPE Wear dust-proof goggles and PVC or rubber gloves. When using large quantities or where heavy contamination is
likely, wear coveralls. Where an inhalation risk exists, wear a Class P1 (Particulate) Respirator. At high dust levels,
wear a Full-face Class P3 (Particulate) respirator. Where sulfur dioxide may be generated, wear a Type B (Inorganic
and Acid Gas) respirator.

FIRST AID
Eye Hold eyelids apart and flush the eye continuously with running water. Continue flushing until advised to stop by the
Poisons Information Centre, or for at least 15 minutes.
Inhalation If exposure occurs leave exposure area immediately. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.
Skin Gently flush affected areas with water. Seek medical attention if irritation develops.
Ingestion For advice, contact a Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 (Australia Wide) or a doctor. If swallowed, do not
induce vomiting.
SAFE HANDLING
Storage Store in cool, dry, well ventilated area, removed from oxidising agents, acids and foodstuffs. Ensure product is
adequately labelled, protected from physical damage and sealed when not in use.
Waste Disposal Cover spill with soda ash or sodium bicarbonate. Mix and spray with water, may be effervescent. Wait until reaction
is complete, scoop into a large beaker and cautiously add equal volume of sodium hypochlorite (reaction may be
vigorous). Add more water, stir and allow to stand (~1hr). Dilute and neutralise. Absorb with sand/similar dispose of
to an approved landfill site, or alternatively (for small amounts) flush to sewer with large excess of water.
Transport Not regulated for transport purposes.
EMERGENCY
Spillage If spilt (bulk), wear dust-proof goggles, PVC/rubber gloves, a Class P1 (Particulate) respirator (where an inhalation
risk exists) and coveralls or protective clothing. Moisten with water to prevent a dust hazard and place in sealable
containers for disposal.
Fire and Non flammable. Evacuate area and contact emergency services. Toxic gases (sulfur oxides) may be evolved when
heated in a fire situation. Remain upwind and notify those downwind of hazard. Wear full protective equipment
Explosion
including Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) when combating fire. Use waterfog to cool intact containers
and nearby storage areas.
Extinguishing Non flammable. Prevent contamination of drains or waterways, absorb runoff with sand or similar.
