III. Hazards Identification
Potential Health Effects:
Acute Eye:
May cause mechanical irritation.
Acute Skin:
None
Acute Inhalation:
Inhalation of dust may cause irritation to the respiratory tract.
Acute ingestion:
May cause irritation to the gastrointestinal tract.
Chronic Exposure:
Prolonged inhalation of iron oxide dust is known to produce a condition known as siderosis. On x-
rays it appears to be a benign pneumoconiosis and is not associated with pulmonary fibrosis or

disability unless there is concurrent exposure to other fibrosis- producing materials such as silica.
The TLV is set to protect against siderosis.
Aggravation of Pre-existing Conditions:
None.
IV. First Aid Measures
First Aid Measures for Accidental:
Eye Exposure:
Immediately flush eyes with copious amounts of water. If irritation develops, SEEK MEDICAL
ATTENTION.
Skin Exposure:
Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing
and shoes. Get medical attention. Wash clothing before reuse. Thoroughly clean shoes before
reuse.
Inhalation:
Move to fresh air. If not breathing, administer artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give
oxygen. SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION.
Ingestion:
If swallowed, DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Give large quantities of water. Never give anything
by mouth to an unconscious person. SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION.
V. Fire Fighting Measures
Fire Hazard Data:
Autoignition: Not considered to be a fire hazard.
Flash Point: None
Flammability Limits (vol/vol%): Lower: Upper:
NA NA
Extinguishing Media:
Use any means suitable for extinguishing surrounding fire.
Special Fire Fighting Procedures:
Use protective clothing and breathing equipment appropriate for the surrounding fire.
Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards:
Black iron oxide may be subject to rapid oxidation if stored at temperatures above 140掳F.

VI. Accidental Release Measures
Cleanup and Disposal of Spill:
Ventilate area of leak or spill. Keep unnecessary and unprotected people away from area of spill. Wear
appropriate personal protective equipment as specified in Section 8. Spills: Pick up and place in a
suitable container for reclamation or disposal, using a method that does not generate dust. Vacuuming or
wet sweeping may be used to avoid dust dispersal. Discard any product, residue, disposable container or
liner in full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
VII. Handling and Storage
Handling/Storage:
Keep in a tightly closed container, stored in a cool, dry, ventilated area. Avoid breathing dusts and getting
in eyes.
VIII. Exposure Controls / Personal Protection
Exposure Guidelines:
Component ACGIH NIOSH OSHA-PELs
5 mg/m3 (Iron Oxide 10 ppm (Iron Oxide Fume as
Magnetite ND
Fume) Fe)
Engineering Controls:
Ventilation must be adequate to maintain the ambient workplace atmosphere below the exposure limit(s)
outlined in the MSDS.
Respiratory Protection:
If the exposure limit is exceeded, a half-face dust/mist respirator may be worn for up to ten times the
exposure limit or the maximum use concentration specified by the appropriate regulatory agency or
respirator supplier, whichever is lowest. A full-face piece dust/mist respirator may be worn up to 50 times
the exposure limit, or the maximum use concentration specified by the appropriate regulatory agency, or
respirator supplier, whichever is lowest. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not
known, use a full-facepiece positive-pressure, air-supplied respirator. WARNING: Air-purifying respirators
do not protect workers in oxygen-deficient atmospheres.
Eye / Face Protection:
Use safety glasses, goggles, or face shield. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in
work area.
Skin Protection:
Wear protective gloves and clean body-covering clothing.
