Section 3 - Hazards Identification

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW

Appearance: dark green crystals.
Warning! Eye contact may result in permanent eye damage. Harmful if swallowed. Possible risks of irreversible effects.
Target Organs: Kidneys, liver, respiratory system, eyes.

Potential Health Effects
Eye: Risk of serious damage to eyes.
Skin: May cause skin irritation. May be harmful if absorbed through the skin.
Ingestion: Harmful if swallowed. May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Inhalation: May cause respiratory tract irritation. May be harmful if inhaled.
Chronic: May cause cancer according to animal studies. Possible risk of irreversible effects. Rhodamine B has caused tumors or has been a questionable tumorigenic agent in studies of subcutaneous injection in rats (RTECS , 2001). It increased thyroid and liver tumors in mice (Opresko, 1982) and produced lymphomas and intestinal tumors when given to mice in the drinking water (HSDB , 1997). However, Rhodamine B was not carcinogenic when given at up to 4% in the diet to rats for two years (Opresko, 1982). IARC has determined that rhodamine B has limited evidence of being an experimental animal carcinogen (Group 3) (RTECS ,

Section 4 - First Aid Measures

Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid imme diately.
Skin: Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical aid if irritation develops or persists.
Ingestion: Get medical aid immediately. Do NOT induce vomiting. If conscious and alert, rinse mouth and drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.
Inhalation: Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid if cough or other symptoms appear. Do not use mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; induce artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device.
Notes to Physician: Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures

General Information: As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear.
