SECTION 2 - PRODUCT INDENTIFICATION
Trade Name: Iron Hydrogenated Dextran Injection
Synonyms: Dextan, D.V. -M Iron Dextran, Hemo-Dex, Injectable Iron, Iron Injectable.
Family/Classification: Iron-dextran complex/hematinic.
Significant Ingredients: Each mL contains 100 mg of elemental iron stabilized with a low
molecular weight hydrogenated dextran and 0.5% phenol.
SECTION 3 - PHYSICAL DATA
Physical Form: Sterile, injectable solution.
Appearance: Dark brown liquid.
pH: 5.5 - 7.2
SECTION 4 - FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD INFORMATION
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Use extinguishing media appropriate for surrounding fire,
preferably water spray, dry chemical or carbon dioxide.
SPECIAL FIRE-FIGHTING PROCEDURES: Isolate hazard and evacuate personnel to safe
area. Move containers away from area of fire if it can be done without risk. Use water spray to
cool fire-exposed containers and surrounding structures. Fire fighters should wear self-contained
breathing apparatus and protective clothing.
UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS: May yield flammable vapors when heated
which can form explosive mixtures with air.
TOXICITY: Intravenous LD50 in mice - 2.24 g Fe/kg.
EFFECTS OF ACUTE OVEREXPOSURE: Depends on route of exposure.
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: Depends on route of exposure.
EYES: Flush with a large amounts of water. If irritation develops get immediate medical
attention.
SKIN: Thoroughly wash exposed areas with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and
launder before reusing. If irritation persists get medical attention.
INHALATION: Remove patient to uncontaminated area and provide fresh air. Give oxygen if
necessary; if not breathing give artificial respiration. Get immediate medical attention.
INGESTION: Rinse mouth with water. Induce vomiting. Feed eggs and milk. Get immediate
medical attention.
SECTION 5 - REACTIVITY INFORMATION
Stability: Stable under ordinary conditions of use and storage. Store at controlled room
temperature between 15掳 and 30掳C (59掳-86掳F).
Conditions to Avoid: Exposure to excessive heat.
Hazardous Decomposition Products: Exposure to fire may yield carbon dioxide and carbon
monoxide.
SECTION 6 - SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES AND DISPOSAL
STEPS TO BE TAKEN IF MATERIAL IS RELEASED OR SPILLED: For small spills, flush
away with water. For large spills, wear protective equipment including rubber boots, rubber
gloves, chemical goggles and face shield; absorb liquid on clay, sand or other suitable absorbent
material and shovel into DOT-approved containers for disposal; flush area with detergent and
water.
WASTE DISPOSAL METHOD: Incineration or sanitary landfill, utilizing facilities that are in
compliance with all applicable Federal, State and local regulations.
