Chronic Effects:
Increased risk with Wilson's Disease. Toxicity caused by accumulation of copper in
sensitive individuals.
First Aid:
Swallowed: Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Give water or milk
to drink.
DO NOT induce vomiting. Seek medical assistance immediately. For advice
contact the National Poisons Centre (0800 764 766) or a doctor immediately.
Eye: Immediately irrigate with copious amounts of water for a minimum of 15
minutes with eyelids held open. Seek medical assistance immediately.
Skin: Immediately flush body and clothes with large amounts of water. Remove
contaminated clothing and footwear. Wash affected areas with soap and water
for 15 minutes. Seek medical assistance if a large area is involved or if
irritation persists.
Inhaled: Remove victim to fresh air. Lay patient down and keep warm and rested. If
breathing shallow or has stopped ensure airway is clear and apply
resuscitation. Seek medical assistance.
First Aid Facilities:
Ensure an eyewash and safety showers are available and ready for use.
Advice to Doctor:
Give fluids. DO NOT induce emesis. No data on treatment, however chelation treatment
would seem appropriate. Give calcium EDTA orally and IV 2% solution in 5% dextrose
25mg/kg over a one to two hour period twice a day. The maximum dose should not
exceed 50mg/kg/day. The drug should be given in 5 day courses with a rest period of at
least two days between courses. Daily urine analyses should be done during the treatment
period. The dosage should be reduced if any unusual urinary findings appear. Watch for
anuria and/or liver damage.
