difficult, administer oxygen. Unconscious persons should be moved to an uncontaminated area and
given assisted respiration and supplemental oxygen. Assure that mucus or vomited material does not
obstruct the airway by use of positional drainage. Delayed pulmonary edema may occur. Keep the
patient under medical attention for at least 24 hours.
After skin contact:
Flush affected areas with copious amounts of water while removing contaminated clothing. Seek
immediate medical attention.
After eye contact:
PERSONS WITH POTENTIAL EXPOSURE SHOULD NOT WEAR CONTACT LENSES. Immediately
flush eyes with large quantities of lukewarm water for at least 30 minutes, occasionally opening and
closing upper and lower lid to ensure adequate flushing. Continue flushing while obtaining immediate
medical attention.
After ingestion:
Unlikely, as the product is a gas at normal conditions of temperature and pressure. If ingestion does
occur, DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING! Call a poison control center immediately for advice.
Medical conditions aggravated by exposure:
May aggravate pre-existing eye, skin and respiratory conditions.
* 5 Fire fighting measures
Flammable Properties:
Nonflammable. Strong oxidizer. Most combustible materials burn in chlorine as they do in oxygen,
producing irritating and poisonous gases. Flame impingement upon steel chlorine container will result
in iron/chlorine fire causing rupture of the container. Cylinder may vent rapidly or rupture violently from
pressure when involved in a fire situation.
Suitable extinguishing agents:
Use extinguishing media appropriate for the combustible material present. Use water spray to keep
cylinders cool.
Protective equipment:
Firefighters should wear an approved NIOSH/MSHA full-facepiece self-contained breathing apparatus
(SCBA) operated in positive pressure mode and full turnout gear with additional chemical protective
clothing as necessary to prevent exposure.
Fire Fighting Instructions:
Use water spray to keep fire-exposed containers cool. Continue to cool fire-exposed cylinders until
well after flames are extinguished. Control runoff and isolate discharged material for proper disposal.
* 6 Accidental release measures
Person-related safety precautions:
Immediately evacuate all personnel from affected area and extinguish all ignition sources. Deny entry
to unauthorized and unprotected personnel. No smoking, sparks, flames or flares in hazard area. Use
appropriate protective equipment (see Section 8). Stop the flow of gas or remove cylinder to outdoor
location if it can be done without risk. Ventilate enclosed areas. A leak near incompatible, flammable
or combustible materials may create a fire or explosion hazard. Consult a HAZMAT specialist and the
appropriate emergency telephone number in Section 1 or your closest Linde location. If the leak is in
user's equipment, be certain to purge piping with an inert gas prior to attempting repairs.

Measures for environmental protection:
Do not allow product or contaminated water to enter sewers, surface waters or groundwater. Chlorine
is highly toxic to aquatic life. Inform respective authorities in case of seepage into water course or
sewage system.
* 7 Handling and storage
HANDLING:
Information about protection against explosions and fires:
Chlorine is an oxidizer. There should be no sources of ignition in areas where this product is used or
stored. Outside or detached storage is preferred. Post "NO SMOKING OR OPEN FLAMES" signs in
storage and use areas.
STORAGE:
Requirements to be met by storerooms and receptacles:
Most metals corrode rapidly with wet chlorine. Systems must be kept dry. Lead, gold, tantalum and
Hastelloy?are most resistant to wet chlorine.
Use only in well-ventilated areas. Valve protection caps must remain in place unless container is
secured with valve outlet piped to the use point. Do not tip, drag, slide or roll cylinders. Use a suitable
hand truck for cylinder movement. Use a pressure-reducing regulator when connecting cylinder to
lower pressure piping or systems. Do not heat cylinder by any means to increase the discharge rate of
product from the cylinder. Use a check valve or trap in the discharge line to prevent hazardous
backflow into the cylinder. Do not insert any object (i.e., screwdriver) into valve cap openings as this
can damage the valve, causing leakage.
Protect containers from physical damage. Store in cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heavily
trafficked areas and emergency exits, and separate from incompatible materials. Do not allow the
temperature where cylinders are stored to exceed 125. Cylinders should be stored upright and firmly
secured to prevent falling or being knocked over. Full and empty cylinders should be segregated. Use
a "first in-first out" inventory system to prevent full cylinders from being stored for excessive periods of
time.
Specific applications:
Separate from combustibles, organics and easily oxidizable materials. Isolate from acetylene,
ammonia, hydrogen, hydrocarbons, ether, turpentine, finely divided metals and other combustible
materials.
For additional information, consult Compressed Gas Association's Pamphlet P-1.
Security:
Store container in a secured area. Limit access to authorized personnel only. Report any incidents
involving thefts, misuse, or inventory shortages (missing containers or cylinders) to law enforcement
and the supplier. Security shall be provided in accordance with all local, state (provincial) and federal
regulations.
* 8 Exposure controls and personal protection
Engineering Controls:
Use local exhaust ventilation in combination with enclosed processes as needed to maintain
concentration of chlorine to below acceptable exposure limits. A hood with forced ventilation may be
used for small quantities. Exhaust gas should be vented to a gas treatment system.

* 11 Toxicological information
ACUTE TOXICITY
LD/LC50 values that are relevant for classification:
Inhalative LC50/4 h 293 mg/l (rat)
Toxicological Overview:
Inhalation of chlorine concentrations as low as 1 ppm may cause nose, throat and conjunctiva irritation.
Irritation becomes more pronounced at concentrations of 1.3 ppm and above, with coughing and
labored breathing. Death may occur after a few breaths at 1000 ppm. Delayed effects following high
exposure may include bronchitis, edema and pneumonia.
PRIMARY IRRITANT EFFECT:
On the skin/eye:
Extremely irritating to the skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Can cause corrosive burns. May cause
corrosion of the teeth. Prolonged exposure to low concentrations of chlorine may cause chloracne or
irritation.
On inhalation:
Corrosive and irritating to the upper and lower resipratory tract and all mucosal tissue. Symptoms
include lacrimation, cough, labored breathing and excessive salivary and sputum formation. Excessive
irritation of the lungs causes pneumomitis, pulmonary edema and respiratory collapse which could be
fatal. Residual pulmonary malfunction may also occur. Chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary edema
may result from exposure to the lower respiratory tract and deep lung.
Other information (about experimental toxicology):
Equivocal evidence of carcinogenicity for chlorine was noted in an IARC review and a 2-year drinking
water study in F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice by the National Toxicology Program (NTP). Literature
references suggest the possibility of mutagenic and teratogenic effects from hypochlorites (a hydrolysis
product of chlorine).
* 12 Ecological information
