Section 3 - Hazards Identification
|
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: colorless or yellow fuming liquid. Flash Point: 75 deg C.
Danger! Causes severe eye and skin burns. Causes
digestive and respiratory tract burns. Reacts violently with
water. Combustible liquid and vapor.
Material hydrolyzes in contact with moisture/water releasing toxic
and corrosive fumes of hydrogen bromide and aqueous hydrobromic
acid. Product evolves acetic acid when exposed to water or humid
air.
Target Organs: Eyes, skin, mucous membranes.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Causes severe eye burns. May result in corneal injury.
Lachrymator (substance which increases the flow of tears).
Skin:
Contact with liquid is corrosive and causes severe burns and
ulceration.
Ingestion:
May be fatal if swallowed. May cause irritation of the digestive
tract and possible burns.
Inhalation:
Irritation may lead to chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary edema. May
cause burns to the respiratory tract.
Chronic:
Chronic exposure to acetic acid may cause erosion of dental enamel,
bronchitis, eye irritation, darkening of the skin, and chronic
inflammation of the respiratory tract. Acetic acid can cause
occupational asthma. One case of a delayed asthmatic response to
glacial acetic acid has been reported in a person with bronchial
asthma. Skin sensitization to acetic acid is rare, but has occurred.
Repeated oral intake of bromides (>9 mg/kg/day) may affect the
central nervous system. Warning symptoms include mental dullness,
slurred speech, weakened memory, apathy, anorexia, constipation,
drowsiness and loss of sensitivity to touch and pain.
|
Section 4 - First Aid Measures
|
Eyes:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes,
occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid imme
diately. Do NOT allow victim to rub eyes or keep eyes closed.
Skin:
Get medical aid immediately. Immediately flush skin with plenty of
water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing
and shoes.
Ingestion:
Do not induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4
cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an
unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately.
Inhalation:
Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh
air immediately. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Do NOT use
mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If breathing has ceased apply
artificial respiration using oxygen and a suitable mechanical device
such as a bag and a mask.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.
|
Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
|
General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in
pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full
protective gear. Combustible liquid and vapor. Use of water will
produce irritating and toxic vapors of hydrogen bromide. Hydrobromic
acid solutions react with most metals, forming flammable hydrogen
gas.
Extinguishing Media:
Do NOT use water directly on fire. Use carbon dioxide or dry
chemical. Do NOT get water inside containers.
Flash Point: 75 deg C ( 167.00 deg F)
Autoignition Temperature: Not applicable.
Explosion Limits, Lower:Not available.
Upper: Not available.
NFPA Rating:
(estimated) Health: 3; Flammability: 2; Instability: 2; Special Hazard: -W-
|
Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
|
General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated
in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Absorb spill with inert material (e.g. vermiculite, sand or earth),
then place in suitable container. Remove all sources of ignition.
Provide ventilation. Do not get water on spilled substances or
inside containers. Use only non-sparking tools and equipment.
|
Section 7 - Handling and Storage
|
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and
wash before reuse. Use with adequate ventilation. Do not allow water
to get into the container because of violent reaction. Do not get in
eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Do not
ingest or inhale. Keep away from heat and flame. Product evolves
acetic acid when exposed to water or humid air.
Storage:
Keep container closed when not in use. Store in a tightly closed
container. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from
incompatible substances. Keep away from water.
|
Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection
|
Engineering Controls:
Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped
with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use adequate
ventilation to keep airborne concentrations low.
