EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: Not available.
Danger! Corrosive. Causes eye and skin burns.
Harmful if inhaled or swallowed. May cause allergic skin reaction.
May be absorbed through intact skin. May cause respiratory and
digestive tract irritation. May cause central nervous system
depression. May cause cancer based on animal studies. Potential
cancer hazard. Light sensitive. Air sensitive. May cause
methemoglobinemia. May cause skin eruptions and/or acne. May cause
liver and kidney damage.
Target Organs: Blood, kidneys, central nervous
system, liver.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Causes eye burns.
Skin:
Causes skin burns. Substance is rapidly absorbed through the skin.
If absorbed, may cause symptoms similar to those for ingestion.
Ingestion:
Harmful if swallowed. May cause irritation of the digestive tract.
May cause liver and kidney damage. May cause methemoglobinemia,
cyanosis (bluish discoloration of skin due to deficient oxygenation
of the blood), convulsions, and death. Methemoglobinemia is
characterized by dizziness, drowsiness, headache, shortness of
breath, cyanosis (bluish discoloration of skin due to deficient
oxygenation of the blood), rapid heart rate and chocolate-brown
colored blood. May cause central nervous system effects. May cause
discoloration of the lips, tongue, and mucous membranes.
Inhalation:
Harmful if inhaled. May cause respiratory tract irritation. May
cause effects similar to those described for ingestion.
Chronic:
May cause cancer according to animal studies.
|
Section 4 - First Aid Measures
|
Eyes:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes,
occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid imme
diately.
Skin:
Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15
minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.
Ingestion:
Call a poison control center. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting
unless directed to do so by medical personnel. Never give anything by
mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid.
Inhalation:
Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh
air immediately. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Do NOT use
mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If breathing has ceased apply
artificial respiration using oxygen and a suitable mechanical device
such as a bag and a mask.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.
|
Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
|
General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in
pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full
protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases
may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion.
Extinguishing Media:
Use water spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or chemical foam. Do
NOT use straight streams of water.
Flash Point: 190 deg C ( 374.00 deg F)
Autoignition Temperature: 500 deg C ( 932.00 deg F)
Explosion Limits, Lower:Not available.
Upper: Not available.
NFPA Rating:
(estimated) Health: 2; Flammability: 0; Instability: 0
|
Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
|
General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated
in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Absorb spill with inert material (e.g. vermiculite, sand or earth),
then place in suitable container. Clean up spills immediately,
observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Provide
ventilation.
|
Section 7 - Handling and Storage
|
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and
wash before reuse. Use with adequate ventilation. Do not get in eyes,
on skin, or on clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Do not ingest
or inhale.
Storage:
Keep container closed when not in use. Store in a tightly closed
container. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from
incompatible substances.
|
Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection
|
Engineering Controls:
Use adequate ventilation to keep airborne concentrations low.
