EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: Purple liquid
Warning! Causes eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritation. May be harmful if
swallowed or absorbed through the skin. May cause kidney damage. May cause
central nervous system effects. Flash Point: > 200癋.
Target Organs: Kidneys, Central nervous system, Eyes, Skin, Mucous membranes

Eye:
Causes eye irritation. May cause chemical conjunctivitis.
Skin:
Causes skin irritation. May cause skin sensitization, an allergic reaction, which becomes evident upon
re-exposure to this material. May be harmful if absorbed through the skin.
Ingestion:
The lethal dose in adult humans for ethylene glycol is about 100 ml (1/3 cup). Swallowing may cause
nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Excessive exposure may cause CNS effects, cardiopulmonary effects
(metabolic acidosis), and kidney failure.
Inhalation:
Causes respiratory tract irritation. May cause effects similar to those described for ingestion. If ethylene
glycol is heated or misted in work areas that are poorly ventilated, vapor/mist may accumulate and cause
respiratory irritation and symptoms such as headache and nausea.
Chronic:
May cause kidney injury. Acetic acid can cause occupational asthma. One case of a delayed asthmatic
response to glacial acetic acid has been reported in a person with bronchial asthma. Skin sensitization to
acetic acid is rare, but has occurred. Repeated excessive exposure to ethylene glycol may cause irritation
of the upper respiratory tract. In humans, effects have been reported on the central nervous system,
including nystagmus (involuntary, rapid, rhythmic movement of the eyeball).

Section 4 - First Aid Measures
Eyes:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower
eyelids. Get medical aid.
Skin:
Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated
clothing and shoes.
Ingestion:
Do not induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give
anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid.
Inhalation:
Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If
breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or
equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by
thermal decomposition or combustion.
Extinguishing Media:
Use water spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or chemical foam.

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
General Information:
Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Absorb spill with inert material (e.g. vermiculite, sand or earth), then place in suitable container. Avoid
runoff into storm sewers and ditches which lead to waterways. Clean up spills immediately, observing
precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Provide ventilation.

Section 7 - Handling and Storage
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Use with
adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid
ingestion and inhalation.
Storage:
Store in a tightly closed container. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible
substances.

Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection
Engineering Controls:
Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower.
Use adequate general or local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations below the permissible
exposure limits.
