Material Safety Data Sheet
CELLPACK-GL (PGL-300A & PGL-310A)
Health Flammability Reactivity Contact

2 0 0 1

1 = Slight, 2 = Moderate, 3 = Severe, 4 = Extreme

1. PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION
CELLPACK-GLTM is a diluent intended for In Vitro White Blood Cell analysis on designated Sysmex
Automated Hematology Analyzers. It is provided in a cardboard cube with a plastic liner.

2. HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS
Percent C.A.S. Number DOT Status
Formaldehyde 3.1% 50-00-0 DOT Class 9 criteria / UN2209 designation
Is not applicable to this dilute solution.

Ethylene Glycol 6.4% 107-21-1 Non-hazardous
Toxicity Estimate:
Formaldehyde: Oral rat LD50 25g/kg.
This value is an extrapolation based on literature references. No animal studies were performed. This
estimate is based on this 3.1% solution, not on formaldehyde gas or the concentrated solution.
Ethylene Glycol: Oral Rat LD50 4700 mg/Kg
Oral Man LDLo, range from 400 mg/Kg to 1600 mg/Kg
Oral Man TDLo, 1.2 to 16 g/Kg

Carcinogen Data: POTENTIAL CANCER HAZARD
RTECS
Formaldehyde: Probable human carcinogen, based on limited evidence in humans and sufficient
evidence in animals. Human data include nine studies that show statistically significant associations
between site-specific respiratory neoplasms and exposure to formaldehyde or formaldehyde containing
products. An increased incidence of nasal squamous cell carcinomas was observed in long-term
inhalation studies in rats and mice.

Ethylene Glycol: Not identified as a human carcinogen
NTP
Formaldehyde is a substance reasonably anticipated to be a carcinogen.
IARC
Formaldehyde has sufficient animal evidence, but inadequate human evidence of carcinogenicity.
NIOSH
Sites tumorigenic data and notes carcinogenic status by RTECS criteria.
EPA
Group B1 carcinogen based upon limited evidence on humans and animals. Formaldehyde is to be
considered a probable carcinogen.

3. PHYSICAL DATA
Clear aqueous solution. Pungent odor detected at 0.8 - 1.0 ppm, however prolonged exposure may
desensitize the olfactory sense. Specific Gravity at 25?C = 1.020. Other physical properties of this solution
have not been determined but can be expected to approximate water, which is its major component.
4. FIRE AND EXPLOSION DATA
CELLPACK-GL is not combustible. However, formaldehyde solutions heated in fire conditions will release
gaseous formaldehyde, which is flammable and explosive.

Fire Fighting Procedures: Full protective clothing/NIOSH approved self-contained breathing apparatus
with full-face piece.
5. REACTIVITY DATA
Stable solution. Incompatibility of other chemicals with formaldehyde is not significant under intended use
conditions.
6. HEALTH HAZARD DATA
Potential cancer hazard. Liquid or vapor irritant to eyes, skin, nose, throat and mucous membranes. Eye
contact may cause severe discomfort and possible injury. Prolonged or repeated skin exposure may result in
allergic eczematous dermatitis, a hypersensitivity reaction. Ingestion may cause irritation to the mouth, throat
and stomach, with vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
Formaldehyde gas is evolved above the liquid, with time the gas concentration increases. For this reason
spills must be handled promptly ?see Spills and Disposal Procedures. When this reagent is used in the
Sysmex NE-Series instrument, there is no measurable environmental discharge of formaldehyde gas.
Opening and changing reagent cubes or instrument maintenance where reagent contact is possible should
be performed with good ventilation, wearing gloves, and lab coat. Safety glasses or goggles and liquid
impervious clothing are suggested if a splash is reasonably anticipated.
Suggested First Aid Procedures
Ingestion: Obtain immediate medical attention. If patient is alert, dilute, inactivate by giving, milk,
activated charcoal, or water. Keep person warm and at rest. If vomiting occurs, turn patient on side and
keep head lower than hips.
Inhalation: Move patient to fresh air. Obtain medical advice.
Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing. Wash affected area with soap and water.
Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with water, lifting lower and upper lids until all traces of irritation is
removed. Obtain medical advice.
7. SPILLS AND DISPOSAL PROCEDURES
Spills should be neutralized and cleaned up promptly or formaldehyde gas concentration will increase with
time. Dike, contain and absorb the spill with neutral absorbent material as possible, and if large spill,
evacuate personnel from the immediate area. Sodium Sulfite may be used to neutralize the formaldehyde,
this and increased ventilation will reduce exposure to formaldehyde gas. Wear gloves, safety goggles and
liquid impervious clothing to protect against splash. Respiratory protection may be necessary to avoid
exposing clean-up crew to levels above the 2.0 ppm STEL. In formaldehyde levels < 7.5 ppm, a half-mask or
full mask negative pressure respirator with formaldehyde rated cartridges may be used. Place absorbed spill
in a sealed container for disposal. Label this container: DANGER FORMALDEHYDE, IRRITANT AND
POTENTIAL CANCER HAZARD. Dispose of waste in accordance with applicable local, state and federal
regulations.
8. STORAGE AND SPECIAL INFORMATION
Store at controlled room temperature away from direct sunlight, to ensure reagent performance.
